Thrift Santas

Today I give you the results of this year’s Web scouring for the most absurd and disconcerting thrift store renditions of Santa Claus.

Because eyes are overrated anyway…

Especially anatomically correct eyes.

Actually, who needs a face, period?

When you have a face, things like THIS can happen:

He sees you when you’re sleeping, kiddies…

“Very superstitious…writings on the wall…”

I sense tragic comedy waiting to happen if THIS fellow ever attempted toy delivery:

No, this is not an intentional “craftastrophe.” I promise. It was found at a regular market (in the Twilight Zone?).

What? Santa is secure enough in his masculinity to wear pink and glow.

I have some holiday themed images floating on my desktop right now, but lets have a look at some of the regular (if such a a word can be used in this case) first.

First, a new piece by Camille Rose Garcia, whom I’ve posted about here, here and here.

[Insert split personality joke for the following]

Damn right:

The perils of waiting too long…

I’m not sure if this is how the “birth” of ideas really works.

Artistically rendered territory of taste:

The “Autobeautifier:”

And for those who prefer to practice beauty techniques with their own hands…

A couple for the pessimists…

This image is actually a giant sea monster projectile vomiting thousands of human bodies. Whoa, indeed.

We’ll finish off with some beautiful projectile vomit by TYPOE

Cthulhu Christmas

“Cthulhu Christmas” felt like an appropriate title for an image odyssey…and I was not disappointed. Something about this creature of the deep seems to lend itself to holiday crafting and products.

Let’s start with a tree topper and ornament from Think Geek:

Santa Cthulhu:

Another, found here.

Looks like this is a popular motif (I like this one’s attitude):

The Mr. and Mrs.:

A nifty card found here:

Another great card from 7 Deadly Sinners:

I love the sun catcher:

Cthulhu cthupcake!

This plush wreath is pretty well done:

There are so many images out there of ornaments, plushies, decorations and cards…if you’re into the Cthulhu thing, definitely poke around online this season.

Image Odyssey: Funhouse

Running an errand at Target yesterday, I passed this gem amidst the aisles of homogenized, CGI graphic infested toys:

Isn’t that great? What a colorful, nightmarish device…reminiscent of a carnival funhouse entrance.

This toy inspired me to explore some actual funhouse entrances in an image odyssey. Here are a few…

I’m sure there are plenty of great carnival images out there. If anyone has great ones to share, please send them my way.

Halloween Countdown: Desktop Treat Bag Vol. 2

It’s almost time for me to leave town, so…cleaning off the desktop to make room for the hundreds of things that will undoubtedly accrue by the time I return.

I’ve never thought to do a pumpkin like this, but it looks great:

An antique bat sketch. Simple. Classy.

And as package design…

And…wrapped in pink…

Continuing with the results of my antique search (though this can be horrifying for multiple holidays):

Witch illustration:

I’d like to construct a replica of this game, because I doubt I’ll ever be able to find it:

Hot…

This horrid, HORRID thing came up in a search for “antique Halloween.” Most people who know me are aware that I have a general aversion to the human foot. A creation like this is entirely uncalled for. But I suppose this “lantern” qualifies as something I consider frightening.

Pardon me while I wash my eyes with bleach.

Let’s end on a romantic note, shall we?

Image Odyssey: Monster Coloring Book

Posted in craft, image odyssey, retro, vintage with tags , , , on August 13, 2010 by shewalkssoftly

After posting about the vintage monster board games, I was wondering what would come up in an image a search for monster coloring books.

Some wonderful retro ones came up.

I’d love a copy of this one…

Monster Cereal book on etiquette!

What an oddly cozy little family…

I even saw a few pages ready for coloring.

Image Odyssey: Fanged Fish

I was inspired to seek out “fanged fish” when I saw the Dracula minnow featured in the Top Ten New Species of 2009:

A search revealed that there are indeed other kinds of fanged fish as well (most notably the African Tiger Fish)…

Since I was out of town for the past week without time to build up extra posts (and only minimal time for my excessive web browsing), I think I’ll just invite you all back into my head with a small spattering of images currently on my desktop.

Skeletons and skulls seemed to pop up more than usual in my findings this week (I’m saving most of them for future posts).

Don’t pretend you’re not sounding this one out and making the noise in your head…

You realize, someone had to arrange the wieners to look this way:

Grief: An Image Odyssey, and Words to Live By

Posted in art, image odyssey with tags , on June 6, 2010 by shewalkssoftly

I rarely make text-based posts, but My Ghoul Friday just posted something I feel is very worth sharing. I’m going to intersperse the text with a deviantart.com image odyssey using the word “death.”

And So We Grieve…

(by bentolman)

Death is always sad, but the reasons for this sadness vary from person to person. And sometimes the sadness comes from an unexpected place.

The tears shed for someone much loved is easier to explain. Obvious, even.

But what about a life spent in bitterness? In pettiness?

We grieve for what could have been.

(by bp-girl)

We weep for the love withheld, and the anger – not joy – heard in a laugh or hidden just beneath a toothy smile. We ponder how cold a life must have been for a person who hid their love away from those who sought it.

We grieve for what could have been. What should have been.

Today I ask you – how will people grieve for you? Will it be because there is now a void in their life that was filled with the love you gave? Will you be remembered for the kindness you showed to others?

(by Lyekka)

Or will people grieve for the life and energy wasted on shallowness. On selfishness. On racism. On elitism.

The last of my living grandparents has left us. And her legacy is one of spite and manipulation.

If there is a heaven, and she manages to talk her way in, I hope she is filled with a blinding love ten times as luminous as the pockets of black she left here on earth.

And so I ask you: How will people grieve for you?

(by liiga)

Withholding love or even a simple kindness from those around you – be it kin, neighbour or stranger – is the same as spreading hate. And no amount of pious, self-righteous reasoning changes that fact.

I mourn any loss of life that brings with it a silent, guilt-ridden sigh of relief from the lips of someone left behind.

I grieve for what could have been.

But my grief will be fleeting.

My Ghoul Friday

(by Redjuice)

I hope that as time goes by, the laugh lines on my face will run deep. And when I shuffle off this mortal coil, I will leave a legacy of kindness and compassion. May this world somehow be slightly better because I was in it.

“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

Image Odyssey: Leprechaun

I’m about to say something that might make me very unpopular: I’ve never done a thing for St. Patrick’s Day. I appreciate the idea of a cultural celebration, but perhaps I associate this day too heavily with those who use it as an excuse to get rip roaring drunk and puke on their own shoes…or someone else’s shoes.

But, since people seem to get very into this holiday, here are some goodies I dug up for the occasion.

Let’s bring on the crafts!

For a nice relaxing sleep after drunken festivities…

Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you…

I wonder if these were mass produced, and there are a bunch of people walking around brandishing one of the most irritating grammatical mistakes in the English language:

(If [your] not able to make a grammatically correct button, fake it!)

I wish I had come up with the idea to slap a label on five green jelly beans and market it as a holiday novelty (at 800% profit per package).

Mmmm…tastes like psychosis.

Have fun…be safe…
