  • Vergvotre

    November 18th, 2014

Very little information exists about Vergvotre (and the bio page on deviantART consists only of a glass phallus, so be aware it’s NSFW. I link you to the safe gallery here).

Can’t you just see these smoky apparitions swirling through their ethereal dance, one moment visible…the next, evaporating into thin air?

  • The Art of William Basso Store

    November 17th, 2014

I’m thrilled to announce the opening of The Art of William Basso Store! Basso is a truly gifted artist of all-things-spooky, and now there are limited edition prints available. I bet these works look phenomenal in print.

    MASQUE_PRINT

“Pale Thing” is one of my all time favorite horror paintings. It’s just perfect in its ashen decrepitude.

You will, of course, find Halloween themed pieces.

And (hopefully) in time for the holidays, this fine Krampus in “Gifts for Ill-Mannered Children.”

  • Flowers That Look Like Things That Are Not Flowers

    November 16th, 2014

I recently came across a post showcasing 17 incredible flowers that look like other things. Isn’t it lovely how nature throws these little gifts at the human tendency to anthropomorphize?

Many of them are variations of orchids, which I will be researching more from this point forward, as I’m sure there are wonders to behold in the world of Orchidaceae.

We have a delicate flying friend…

I’ve always been fascinated by “visible” anatomy models. I finally have a kit, waiting to be built (it’s a real labor of love, as all the organs and parts are white and must be hand painted!). But I look forward to it. Here’s a classic:

  • Susanne Apgar

    November 14th, 2014

Susanne Apgar has captured my eye as of late.

    sa1

    From the artist bio:
Susanne Apgar’s artistic impulses appear to have been triggered or perhaps galvanised by a simple surrealist coffee-table art book in her childhood home. Amazed and obsessed by the peculiar images like a fur-covered cup and spoon, long legged elephants and outed inner visions, her path was set. Permission granted.

  • Crazy Vintage Diet Books

    November 12th, 2014

The Sexy Pineapple Diet in Desktops Goodies: Crazy Book Edition inspired this spinoff post about some of the more absurd diet publications of years gone by (for the record, I’m sure many of today’s crazes will eventually be relegated to this category). I had to see what else was lurking in our culture’s weight conscious past. Caution: the final one is actually NSFW.

  • House of Collection

    November 11th, 2014

I’ve found a new source of home inspiration (well, it’s not exactly new since this has been sitting in my queue for years, but it WAS new inspiration when I first saw it).

Paige Stevenson and Ahnika Meyer have transformed their Brooklyn loft into a veritable museum of lost, discarded, forgotten wonders.

    811kp

I love living spaces that are thick with history and storied fragments of days gone by. Their place is a gorgeous showcase, largely due how they choose to display these “mundane” items. There is a perfect contrast of still life and lush plant growth.

  • Marco Mazzoni

    November 10th, 2014

I could have sworn I’d posted about Marco Mazzoni before, but I was thinking of Meghan Howland (another artist fond of painting faces obscured by flowers and birds!).

    tumblr_ljphxl8yDW1qeuyyqo1_500

Oh, he had me at the Tarsier…
    tumblr_myhbhj3XOQ1qeuyyqo1_500

    …and entwined bundles of wildlife.
    tumblr_n1o5iuBzXD1qeuyyqo1_500

I wish there were an artist statement so I could get his take on the subject matter. I’ve had clear images of flowers sprouting from (and/or) covering human faces in meditation exercises, but I imagine Mazzoni’s images have personal meaning unique to him.
    tumblr_na7h9biWLd1qeuyyqo1_500

Most pieces are done in colored pencil, which allows for a gorgeous softness and makes the vivid colors pop (and sometimes allows eyes and faces to glow by contrast in that I can only call “exorcismal” intensity).

  • Jellyfish Aquarium

    November 9th, 2014

High on my list of Useless Things I Still Want Even Though They’re Useless is a Jellyfish Aquarium.

Here is the version from The Sharper Image:
    j1

Create a calm, tranquil environment in your home or office with our unique Jellyfish Aquarium. This maintenance-free environment features two lifelike artificial jellyfish, illuminated by 18 LEDs that change color with five different effects. Simply fill the tank with water, add the jellyfish, and turn it on.

    Another on Amazon:

    513+PwWlOBL

And yet another (slightly less expensive despite having more jellies):

    j2

I fear I would be transfixed by this for absurd amounts of time…but no complaints there.

  • Rainbow Eucalyptus

    November 8th, 2014

While this is probably exactly how I would have chosen to paint a tree when I was growing up in the 80’s (I loved bright colors as a little kid, though this preference burnt out so completely that I haven’t needed to do a load of white/bright laundry in over 20 years!), what you’re looking at is a phenomenon of nature.

    rainbow eucalyptus

The inner bark is bright green, and with peeling, air exposure and time, the other brilliant colors emerge.
    eucalyptus_deglupta

These trees can grow up to six feet wide and over 200 feet tall. Currently it is grown widely around the world in tree plantations, mainly for pulpwood used in making paper.
