  • Misha Kahn

    September 21st, 2010

Talk about perfect placement! I’m sure we’ve all thought “If only I had the perfect place for my deer sculpture and my thermos…”

Well, Misha Kahn constructed a very unique and personal storage system.

Apparently he surveyed the random objects in his apartment, printed out life size cut outs, and assembled them into a giant thought bubble that served as a construction blueprint.

Constructed of laser cut mdf, and pink foam, then fiberglassed and coated with molded polysterene. The interior is painted and flocked, with hardwood (dovetailed) drawers, and door. Stands 7 feet’ 6” inches high.

  • Charlie Immer

    September 20th, 2010

It’s been quite sometime since I first began to adore Charlie Immer’s sweet, de-fleshed creations.

They float somewhere between the horror of a messy crime scene and a child’s toy box. Like Saturday morning cartoons…with some bones and exposed viscera thrown in for good measure.

    Precious, no?

  • An Early Announcement

    September 19th, 2010

After my local craft stores discontinued to stock the main color, and I embarked on countless fruitless searches, I’ve finally located the (albeit more expensive) craft felt color I need for The *Original* Turducken Ornament.

This means, orders are BACK ON for this holiday season!

This is just an initial heads-up, but here’s the original post with contact link if you’d like to place an early order.

  • Cereal Marshmallows

    September 19th, 2010

This site has been making the rounds online for a while. And although I like to avoid posting things that show up everywhere, I can’t help but pay tribute to an idea that so thoroughly caters to one’s inner child.

Since I’m a “best for last” habitual eater, I liked to save a special concentration of marshmallows for my last few bites of cereal as a child. Oooh…those last bites…kid heaven.

We all know that the little dehydrated marshmallow pellets in cereal and cocoa are disgusting. The nostalgia factor alone counts for something (after all, it was candy IN your breakfast). And some foods are just so artificial, so ridiculous, so…seemingly inedible…that you must respect them. I put these marshmallows in a category with Twinkies and Yoo-Hoo. I don’t care if they’re abominations…I love them, and no one can’t stop me.

The child in me still squeals like I’ve stumbled upon a treasure when I see those giant bags. This used to be food we had to WORK for. And now it’s all there in its crunchy, oddly colored, ambiguously shaped glory. There is something powerfully decadent about owning a bag of Cereal Marshmallows. I think I’d feel like I could conquer the world.

    Purchase your own here

…and pardon me while I retire to contemplate ways of distilling other hard-earned elements of kid food for production and sale.

  • Meagan Segal

    September 18th, 2010

After taking a look at Meagan Segal’s artwork, I asked her to email me a few pieces that would be appropriate for SheWalksSoftly. I got a splendid little cornucopia of morbid, lumpy anatomical bits set against classic still life backgrounds.

Dare I even wonder who would decorate their living space like this?

Oh dear…we are in a serial killer movie…

The damask wallpaper is a nice touch.

In addition to the disembodied organs, you will also find cupcakes and chocolates and traditional still life subject matter. Don’t believe me? Explore here.

    Thanks, Meagan!

  • Halloween Countdown 2010

    September 17th, 2010

Like many other bloggers who love Halloween, I’ll be participating in a Halloween Countdown. I’d love your feedback in advance so I can make posts you’d be interested in reading. Please take a second to vote!

    Looking forward to this…

  • A Truly Impressive Haunted Mansion Collection

    September 17th, 2010

I’m on a Haunted Mansion kick lately. The other day I decided I was going to make a collection of Haunted Mansion portraits (perhaps miniatures) to hang in my library…which currently has zero available wall space.

Tooling around with random searches I came across a Distant Creations post showcasing Richard Brigante’s Haunted Mansion collection.

WOW. I am seriously impressed. He has every type of collectible ever manufactured.

I think he should start a small museum. I’d go in a heartbeat.

See more photos of the collection here.

  • Utilitarian Franchise

    September 16th, 2010

I was rather captivated by The Utilitarian Franchise on Etsy. Here we find a collection of silk screened vintage designs, on pillows and wall hangings.

Ah, to lay one’s weary head down on an image of antiquated science!

He strikes a nice balance between antique and modern.

It’s almost too predictably up my alley.

The heart design is also available for the wall…

  • Second Empire Victorian: The Haunted Archetype

    September 15th, 2010

I was browsing The Old Haunted House and happened to notice that a number of classic “haunted” houses in film, theme parks, etc. have been built in the style of Second Empire Victorian.

I thank the website, because it spurred me to do some research on Victorian architectural styles.

What about this particular subset of Victorian style lends itself so well to haunted atmospheres? What about elongated dormer windows, towers and Masnard roofs is so terribly attractive to the undead?

    Pop culture has many examples.

    The Munster Mansion:

    The Psycho House:

    Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Paris:

I have to admit that Second Empire Victorian is one of my all time favorite architectural styles (you may remember my model DREAM HOUSE).

Maybe the dead just have great taste.

  • LA “Artinerary”

    September 14th, 2010

Okay, I made up the word, but here is my LA art itinerary (artinerary). There are so many fantastic galleries out here, it was actually hard to choose a handful to prioritize.

Congregation Gallery Black Plague Art Show, which I already posted about

Copro Gallery- The Blab Show (this one features many of my favorite artists)

Corey Helford Gallery (currently has a Buff Monster exhibit, followed by a three artist show featuring Krista Huot, MIA and Korin Faught)

Distinction Gallery- Andy Haynes (solo show)

Gallery 1988- 3G Show: Ghostbusters, Goonies and Gremlins (a sweet heap of 80’s movie nostalgia…huge group show!)

Gallery Meltdown- The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep

Gallery Nucleus- Sweet Streets II (massive group show!)

    Subliminal Projects- Shepard Fairey

And of course, the Lowbrow Tarot Art Show

So much great art…so little time! Now onto checking museums, music and film…
