  • Bigert & Bergstrom: Mikrokosmos

    December 2nd, 2014

Swedish art duo Bigert & Bergstrom offer an innovative way to look at photography in their installation entitled Mikrokosmos.

These spherical photos, vividly real yet oddly alien, are illuminated from the inside. I love the way pieces of tiny worlds are joined together in conglomerates that resemble molecular structures suspended in space.

After the holiday weekend, food might be one of the last things you want to look at, but trust me…these cakes from Choccywoccydoodah will be an exception. These are are some of the most unique, quirky, finely crafted cakes in the world.

    10730789_10152937861044189_1281704493600236574_n

Their website does contain ready to order items, but the bespoke cake gallery (where all of these images come from) showcases the highlights of their talent.

Unfortunately, my dreams of one day gracing an event of my own with one of these masterpieces will most likely never come to fruition, as the shop is located in the UK and does not ship to the US.

But I can look and admire…

  • See You All on Monday!

    November 27th, 2014

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to my readers here in the US! I’m most likely taking a couple of days off to spend with my little family (of two). Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you on Monday!

  • Cirque Obscure

    November 26th, 2014

The creator of Cirque Obscure recently shared his puppetry work with me, and these creatures are right at home here on SWS. One look at this, and I was sold:

    trench14_row_01

All of these puppets have a distinct darkness about them; a sense of emptiness, melancholy…they are the misunderstood and the damned.
    OldDog_02

The aesthetic reminds me slightly of Tool’s “Sober” video (one of my all time favorites), which along with NIN’s “Closer” helped open me up in my early teens to dimensions of dark surrealism beyond what I had seen as a horror-obsessed child.

Watch the trailer for the latest release. I can’t wait to see the complete film:

  • Sprookjesbos, The Fairytale Forest

    November 24th, 2014

Before the Efteling theme park (the largest in the Netherlands) was opened around these works, ten delightfully unsettling fairytale scenes graced Sprookjesbos.

    Eknibbelknabbel

Dummies based on the darkly nuanced illustrations of Dutch artist Anton Pieck populate fantasy tableaux straight out of European fables.

    From the source:
The original set of tableaus contained scenes from such popular stories as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty as well as lesser known tales such as Mother Hulda’s Well and The Frog King. Some of the figures in the scenes were animated with early mechanical effects, and each scene had a voice-box or book that would tell the story associated with it.

Since its inception the collection of scenes continued to grow, building moments from stories ranging from Little Red Riding Hood to The Indian Water Lillies. Each new scene maintained Pieck’s signature style, even as the technology evolved, and even as older fairytale scenes were updated and replaced. Today there are a total 28 scenes, each culled from the fairy tale greats such as Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm. And just like the original stories, they continue to prove just a little creepy.

I’d love to see a full photo collection of the pre-Efteling lanscapes.

  • The Day My Kid Went Punk

    November 23rd, 2014

I missed this Afterschool Special growing up, but it’s truly a (temporary spray-on hair color covered) gem. I highly recommend it.

    1416350593-0

Terry, the leading man, transforms instantaneously in an airport bathroom from an awkward orchestra geek to the world’s most innocuous punk. Is the resulting appearance-based prejudice he encounters a warning for parents to keep their children from going down this “bad” path, or a commentary on a shallow, judgmental society*?

*They make a point of having Terry save the day for a sad little girl with leg braces…by somehow materializing a doll with identical leg braces…while at a horse stable, after her mother is denied permission to just “strap her to a horse.” I’m not kidding.

Only one thing is certain: the special is entirely ineffective, and quite marvelously fails, at any of its possible aims. In other words: watch this ASAP.

  • Charm Villa Goldfish Teabags

    November 22nd, 2014

When I was little, I used to pretend the teabags in my mugs were fish, swirling them through the water to make them “swim” by pulling on the string.

Charm Villa has brought a piece of my childhood imagination to life with their goldfish teabags!

I’m surprised more companies haven’t done this. It seems like the most natural design idea in the world to me!

  • The Lennon Sisters: Dry Bones

    November 20th, 2014

If you’ve never caught this classic, it’s time you watch The Lennon Sisters performing Dry Bones. Adorably out of sync, but full of heart.

  • Martha Rotten

    November 19th, 2014

I’ve just been browsing Martha Rotten’s Etsy store, and I came across some interesting jewelry bits.

My favorites (which I hope to add to my collection one day) are the clock hand earrings and necklace.

    il_570xN.521858489_fu2z

There are many variations of bone, straight, curved and otherwise.

    And the occasional Confessional Cuff.

Mer-babies are a rather underrepresented part of the Mer-kingdom…at least in jewelry.
