  • Ennuigi

    August 14th, 2015

I never got into video game consoles, but I loved Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo as a kid.

Now, Josh Millard has developed a sequel of sorts: Ennuigi, in which we are invited to “spend some time with a depressed, laconic Luigi as he chain smokes and wanders through a crumbling Mushroom Kingdom, ruminating on ontology, ethics, family, identity, and the mistakes he and his brother have made.”

    screenshot

This is a shot at a collection of ideas I had a few years ago, about looking critically at the universe of Super Mario Bros. in light of the total lack of explicit narrative in the original game in particular. Who are these strange men? What motivates them? By what right do they wreak the havoc they do on this strange place? What do they feel about where they are and what they’re doing?

    screenshot1

And so, this is one lens through which to look at all that, with Luigi, the second brother, the also-ran, as a complicit onlooker, wandering now through some fractured, rotting liminal place in this strange world, reflecting on it all in scattered fragments.

What do you think, Nintendo fans?

I always enjoy photographic evidence of new species discovered (the Earth is just an endless bounty of surprises, isn’t it?). My favorites are always the delightfully alien sea creatures. These sculptures could very well fall under that category.

  • Poison Apple Cookies

    August 11th, 2015

I admire talented cookie and cake decorators because, like any art, the creation process requires dedication and patience. But pastry artists earn a little extra respect because they have to possess the aforementioned qualities AND not devour their own art before it’s finished (a task I’m fairly ill equipped to handle…I’d probably try to eat a painting of a cupcake if it came out well enough).

So check out these high quality poison apple cookies by Angelica Made Me:

For those who haven’t seen the original animation, you’re looking at the tainted fruit the wicked Queen gives Snow White. This was one of my favorite images in the movie when I was young. I thought it looked so cool and I loved how the skull emerged out of nowhere with the drips.

  • Lizz Lopez: Hands

    August 10th, 2015

Her website is down at the moment (at least for me; not sure if it’s maintenance), so I’ll link to Lizz Lopez’s Facebook page.

Aside from the face, the hands are perhaps the most expressive part of the body, and Lopez is truly gifted in her depiction of expressive hands. I could not look away from this:

    lizz-lopez-intro

In a number of pieces, flesh fades to bone…alive and possessing stories to tell, with a subtle reminder that it’s all ephemeral.

She has many other talents, but allow your eye to get lost in the gnarls and folds of these soulful digits…

I dare you to watch this slice of religious musical embarrassment without cringing. Also, pretend it’s 1984.

Yes, this is real. No, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, they are not.

Although there are illustrations and screen prints in the portfolio, I’d like to predominantly focus on Pixel Pancho’s terrific street art.

I can’t resist high quality “mechanorganic” creations (a term I just coined because I desperately need a way to succinctly describe the artistic combinations of mechanical and organic matter I post so often…I should’ve been using this as a tag all along).

Tulle isn’t just for prom and wedding dresses. Benjamin Shine uses this gossamer netting to construct large scale portraits with incredible dimension.

The enigmatically named “Seymour” is actually the work of Melbourne based artist Peter Kelk.

I was first drawn to his work via his excellent lowbrow sculptures.

  • Invictus Designs: Tooth Fairy

    August 4th, 2015

Upon hearing the words “Tooth Fairy,” most of us probably conjure up sweet, fluttering little fairies. Invictus Designs has a different idea:

Yes, kids…all the times you thought this was visiting you in your sleep…

    …it was really THIS!

    Shhh…don’t tell the others.
