  • Jeannie Lynn Paske: Obsolete World

    April 26th, 2011

Jeannie Lynn Paske describes the vibe of her work perfectly:

There is a world tucked away behind this one. An old world made up of endless fields, distant hills and timeworn cliffs. A place where the sun is always setting. A land in which extinct slow-moving monsters and elegant gentle-faced creatures of all shapes and sizes reside. Delicately balancing their hope with despair.

Reminiscent of long departed dreams and uncollected thoughts. Time stands still here, so as to let the residents gaze in solitude upon the vast, richly textured skies. Forever in search of a place to better sit and watch their world pass them by.

    So beautiful, contemplative, melancholy…

  • Pimp My Ride: Jesus Edition, Circa 1975

    April 25th, 2011

I actually saw this in a parking lot today.

I have no personal affiliation with Jesus, aside from thinking that he was probably a really great guy…with some pretty frightening fanatical followers. But this vehicle makes me happy to be alive. Have you seen anything better than a Jesus Pimpmobile today?

(Note: I actually googled “pimpmobile” to make sure it is indeed one word)

Oops. I forgot to post this before Easter. Here…have some nightmares.

  • Sketchy Bunnies Part 2

    April 24th, 2011

    Another installment of Sketchy Bunnies.

    This looks alarmingly…pre-abduction.

    Hypnotized…

I can’t pinpoint exactly what this reminds me of, but it’s uncomfortable.

    *Gasp* The Great Rabbit Overlord!

This is what happens when you cross the Great Rabbit Overlord.

I don’t recommend touching this guy’s stash of uppers.

Yeah, unfortunately everything sags a little with age.

“It’s my lazy eye, isn’t it? You’re looking at my lazy eye.”

    Even the child is incredulous.

Screw the Easter Bunny. BACON is where it’s at!

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it!

  • Easter Roundup

    April 24th, 2011

Easter is high atop the list of holidays I don’t celebrate, but I do love the yearly reemergence of Cadbury Creme Eggs. This image comes from an online game Cadbury launched this season (it needs to me aimed at my mouth).

    Amazing:

    From Bob Doucette:

Lovely little bunnies from Ron English:

I spotted this rabbit on speed in a grocery store (note the oddly placed block of cheese next to him. Did he steal it in an amphetamine rampage?):

A bunch of bunnies by Frijol Boy:

    This one’s a meat eater:

    And this one is…like me:

    Two by Nicoletta Ceccoli:

    Double sweetness:

This is what you will dream after too much Easter candy:

    No comments necessary.

Just a happy day in the garden…

Not sure I understand what they were going for with this military theme.

    Love the Easter Witch!

    And here’s a bit of nostalgia…

I feel awkward looking at this:

    HAREdo! Get it? Get it?

    Happy Easter…we’re halfway to Halloween!

  • The Eggshell Sculptor

    April 23rd, 2011

To answer the inevitable question: yes, these are all real, regular eggs (from many types of birds, in fact).

Gary LeMaster is an egg carving genius. You must admire his desire to tackle this particular art form.

    About the process:

First, I empty and clean each egg. After the egg has dried, I use a lead pencil to sketch the details of my artwork directly on the shell. I then cut away appropriate sections of the design or engrave the surface of the shell (or both), using a variety of diamond and carbide cutting tools.

My tool of choice is a dental handpiece powered by an air compressor which generates over 400,000 rpm’s for the burs to do their job. Once the egg has been fully worked, I use my hands and an abrasive cleanser to remove any remaining pencil marks.

The egg is then submerged in two bleach baths to disintegrate any membrane residue from the inside surface. Finally, the egg is signed and sealed with three or four coats of lacquer. It is then placed on a stand inside a glass dome to preserve and enhance its beauty.

There are even portraits, and he does custom orders.

Le Master started classes, a resource collection and an Eggshell Sculptor Magazine.

  • Sketchy Bunnies

    April 22nd, 2011

Every year it seems a new site (or a few) pop up to honor the profoundly disturbing characteristics of rabbit mascots. This year, I bring you a few favorites from Sketchy Bunnies.

This lovely lady-bunny with the Tammy Faye eyes is destined for a makeup contract. Lashes so lush they turn the WHOLE EYE black!

At least this one avoided SOME of the whites of her eyes in makeup application.

Ideally, one’s makeup look should be balanced…

Oh come on…this just looks alien. Costume designers, please cease all attempts at rabbit eye makeup.

    There is safety in numbers…

    Right?

I didn’t know bunnies grew five o’clock shadows and could look like a disgruntled creepy uncle.

I’m not sure if this one “counts” since it’s intentionally evil, but I think the evil is well executed.

    This one too…

  • Sandra Arteaga: Axolotl

    April 21st, 2011

I’ve already posted about Sandra Arteaga’s fabulous dolls, but I must post one of her recent creations.

Two years ago I raved about the Mexican Axolotl (and even made a plushie axolotl for a blog contest winner). Now this bizarre, sweet little creature finds some representation in Ms. Arteaga’s work!

Not exactly sweet…but so strange and intriguing, I can’t look away…

  • Edward Scissorhands 20th Anniversary Tribute

    April 20th, 2011

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since Edward Scissorhands came out.

Gallery 1988 has an awesome tribute group show, featuring some old favorites, amazing animators and new talent.

See the whole show online here.

  • Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men

    April 18th, 2011

No comment I make about this could possibly do justice, so I’m just going to say “Enjoy.”
