    Radio Police Automaton!

There is always a screen full of anatomical images on my desktop (and I clear them out daily!). I never know which ones to feature.

I absolutely love this model. Someone please tell me I could justify this as a neuroscience study aid.

Late 1500’s anatomical representation. Sometimes I feel like my nerves are doing this.

I’ve slacked on brushing my liver lately.

I’ve saved this photo so many times over the years just to be sure I have it.

Double the legs of the famous A Christmas Story lamp!

Natural lip line? Never heard of it!

Oh hell, just start the whole thing over…

If you need this warning…please don’t spawn.

    Don’t ask…just enjoy…

    A little vintage print…

*ACTION GOD* is kicking ass and taking names!

I don’t know about you, but when I think of rabbits, the first thing that comes to mind is bulging biceps and pecs. And washboard abs. Rabbits with washboard abs.

I’ve now had a number of (nonconsecutive) chuckles at the phrase “raging needs.” I have to start using it every day life. “Please give me some chocolate…I have raging needs.”

And as long as we’re on the topic of sexy ladies…how about these underthings? Ooh…sky high white acetate with insects!

I find bats in the dress more appealing than ants in the pants.

I don’t know the origins of this, but some things are probably better left unexplored (yes, that’s a monkey man).

If I were ever to send a Thanksgiving card…

  • Plants on the Brain

    May 28th, 2011

Are you tired of the same old pots and containers for your plants? Have you considered a baby head or a bizarre chimera? If so, try Plants on the Brain.

But what type of body lurks beneath these little heads?

Here’s Olivia the Upscale Chicken Planter (when was the last time you heard the phrase “upscale chicken”…not in reference to fine dining of any sort?).

This one is called…I kid you not…Cock a Bye Baby.

  • Ray Harryhausen Creature Compliation

    May 27th, 2011

Since yesterday’s post was in honor of my late mother, this one goes out to my father who introduced me to legions of fantastic monsters, aliens, villains and robots.

Last time I visited him in LA we enjoyed some Ray Harryhausen. Here’s a complication of stop-motion animated goodness from the master himself.

Dad, you know I think of you fondly whenever I see something explode, zoom through space, rise from the grave or battle.

    Precious moments. 🙂

  • Nick Rayburn: Ruby Slippers

    May 26th, 2011

I’ve posted about Nick Rayburn’s amazing Waiting Hand Automaton.

I wish I could have given his new project, The Ruby Slippers, to my mother as a gift.

One of my first and greatest memories of creativity was my mother making me a pair of my very own “ruby slippers” when I was a toddler. I felt like the most special little thing in the universe when I slipped those babies on.

    Wonderful work, Nick!

The best thing about this photo is the utterly nonchalant New Yorker ascending the steps as if there is not a giant crashed automobile a few inches away from him. Perfect encapsulation of my fair city!

Yes, this is a real ad for a real product. Once upon a time this was un-ironic. Love the classy businessman demonstrating its use, and the text boasting its design by “a European artist.”

Check out this amazing fried chicken ad. Work that price tag on your hat Ms. Thing!

I have no idea what this title implies.

I could get into the biochemistry of it all, but the short answer to the following question is “because it’s AMAZING.”

When voices in one’s head become a bit much…

    Aww…look at that adorable expression!

I love the isolated contrast of the figure in this illustration. One bright light moving through a dark, abandoned world…

Where’s the order form for this one? I want it on my coffee table.

Skull porn! (I’m frightened to see how many people reach this site searching for that term).

I’m sure folks nowadays would be quick to defame Tickle Tim with various unsavory comments.

Speaking of pickles, how about some romance?

Nothing says “love” like caricatured imprisonment.

    …No baby, it’s SCIENCE!

Actually, this is a pretty nice sentiment (at least for a cynical romantic like me).

  • Alpha Stamps

    May 22nd, 2011

I’m not sure whether to thank Art of Darkness for introducing me to Alpha Stamps. I didn’t really need more craft supplies to lust after, but now I’m hooked.

The rubber stamp selection is amazing (and very reasonably priced).

Strange creatures, art, ephemera, alchemy, typography, filigree, gears and poison…things that make my heart sing…

Did I mention the incredible collection of collage sheets?

Nevermind that in my rabid seeking I’ve collected most of the images on this site in my archives over the years. There’s just something fantastic about seeing them out there for use!

Lovers and makers of vintage themed art…prepare to waste some time here.

  • Rapture Roundup

    May 21st, 2011

I thought I’d do something clever to celebrate The Rapture here. Then I realized this is the internet. People have already been flooding the web with jokes and memes.

Everyone’s probably sick of it already. This is a shame because The Rapture creates a breed of material that is both theologically AND artistically appalling. It’s about as much fun as you can have while horrified by humanity.

    (above from Regretsy)

See more incredible examples in this little gallery.

And since you may be seeing the same Rapture memes repeatedly, here are some past apocalyptic posts on SheWalksSoftly that you might have missed:

  • Mr. Chair

    May 21st, 2011

Now, I have a strict rule against my furniture being in better shape than I am. But if you prefer your chairs with well defined pecs and abs, you might want to consider “Mr. Chair.”

This is furniture that seems to say “Don’t you dare sit on me when you could be working out right now, you lazy sack of crap!”

  • Ernst Haeckel

    May 19th, 2011

Every now and then I have to sit back and re-marvel at Ernst Haeckel’s work.

Even the first part of his brief Wiki biography is mind-blowing: biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, and the kingdom Protista.

(Apologies to anyone who thought they were having a productive day and just got knocked down a few pegs)

I don’t think I could ever look at the staggering beauty with which he depicts the natural world and not be utterly awestruck.

Nature itself is perhaps the greatest artist, but it takes a phenomenally talented human being to represent it with such masterful technique.

I was actually stunned to recently discover that I don’t have any books of Haeckel’s work. Any recommendations? I’d also like to seek out a few choice prints.
