The Prisma Visions Tarot

The latest tarot deck I’ve been drooling over is the Prisma Visions Tarot, illustrated by the amazing James R. Eads.

Adjacent cards in each suit line up side by side to form a panoramic picture and story. What a fabulous concept, and seemingly quite well executed here. The deck comes with a 100 page guide book.

Pole Ka: The Tarot de Marseille

Posted in art, tarot, wish list with tags , , , on August 25, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

I first saw this deck in the Morbid Anatomy Museum online store, but it is currently sold out. I’d very much like to add French artist Pole Ka’s Tarot de Marseille to my collection one day (main website NSFW).

It’s a full collection of 78 cards, all containing original art. From the sample images, it looks rather interesting and well done.

The Medieval Scapini Tarot

Posted in antiques, art, illustration, tarot with tags , , , , on August 6, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

I’ve just started looking through the decks at Tarot Tator and the Medieval Scapini Tarot caught my eye. Some of these cards are truly awesome.

Death:
13-Death-The-Medieval-Scapini-Tarot

That may be my favorite card. Death is so elegantly poised (seemingly in the midst of dance) on a sea of the drowning and/or dead.

The Hermit:
9-The-Hermit-The-Medieval-Scapini-Tarot

I love that the Hermit is also walking on water…and is an actual giant. I relate very much to the Hermit, so it makes me happy to see him so empowered (as opposed to the sullen version in the Rider Waite deck). The symbolism in this card is among the richest I’ve seen in various depictions of the Hermit.

Ace of Wands:

There is a lot going on here. Fiery, chaotic, generative magic! Rock on.

Ten of Swords (come on…swords, containing figures holding swords. How meta. The blood is a nice touch, too).

Nicoletta Ceccoli Tarot

I received the Ceccoli Tarot as a random gift from a very special person who truly knows the strange, surreal depths of my soul.

This deck is STUNNING. It’s a masterpiece.

I had a blast going through each card of the deck and seeing how Ceccoli’s interpretation of the cards ties into the Rider Waite deck, and every thread of discovery was exciting.

The fact that she does take creative liberty opens the mind up to all sorts of visions and connections. It’s like therapeutic dreamwork!

I highly recommend this deck And of course, check out Nicoletta Ceccoli’s website.

Zsofia Dome

Zsofia Dome takes my breath away with her detailed illustrations. It was this anthropomorphic root series that made me need to track down her work.

I’m also particularly impressed with her tarot series, in which she loosely sticks to the themes of the universal Rider Waite deck, but takes some fantastic artistic liberty.

I do hope she comes out with an actual deck at some point. I’d be thrilled to add it to my collection!

The Lost Tarot

Here is yet another gorgeous tarot deck, a bit out of my price range, that I find very interesting: The Lost Tarot

The use of skulls and skeletons is lovely, and the soft color scheme is quite unique (click image to enlarge a bit).

Hopefully one day this deck will be part of my collection!

I also recommend checking out the other categories of art on Dominic Murphy’s site. There are treasures to be found there!

The Deck of the Bastard

The Deck of the Bastard is a hybrid tarot deck that draws from a number of antique/vintage decks.

The creator says:
I always wanted a vintage deck. But they were so expensive. I saw them on eBay (over $500) and even then, the old decks did not have the same cards we use today (no Hanged Man, & with odd cards like “Birds & Animals” & such). As an artist, over the years I tried to design a vintage – looking deck…but, I could never make anything I was happy with.

In frustration, I finally bastardized several vintage decks, including the Egyptiens Fortune Telling Cards by Delarue France in the 1890’s, the Dames deck and the Rider Waite deck for most of the pips. I added vintage edges in the borders and photo-shopped antiquing onto each individual card (NOT dropped into a single TEMPLATE! ), and unified them with similar colorings. For the back, I used an antique book cover that I edited.

The cards look beautiful and are “aged” quite well for an authentic appearance. While $70 is too steep for me at the moment, I do think these cards would be a great collector’s item.
