A Truly Impressive Haunted Mansion Collection

I’m on a Haunted Mansion kick lately. The other day I decided I was going to make a collection of Haunted Mansion portraits (perhaps miniatures) to hang in my library…which currently has zero available wall space.

Tooling around with random searches I came across a Distant Creations post showcasing Richard Brigante’s Haunted Mansion collection.

WOW. I am seriously impressed. He has every type of collectible ever manufactured.

I think he should start a small museum. I’d go in a heartbeat.

16th Century Rosary

What an interesting artifact. The carvings on this 16th Century German Rosary Terminal are quite intricate…and macabre.

Each bead of the rosary represents the bust of a well-fed burgher or maiden on one side, and a skeleton on the other. The terminals, even more graphically, show the head of a deceased man, with half the image eaten away from decay. Such images served as reminders that life is fleeting and that leading a virtuous life as a faithful Christian is key to salvation.

Santa Muerte

A recent Boing Boing post inspired me to dig through my collection of Santa Muerte (Saint Death) images (and grab a new one or two).

I find myself drawn to Santa Muerte imagery because I’m fascinated by Mexcio’s colorful, celebratory reverence for death (a cultural phenomenon rarely exhibited in the US).

I’ve come across some wonderful displays and products.

Some have a slightly morbid flare…

If anyone knows a place in NYC (or online) where I might find some great Santa Muerte artifacts, please share!

It’s that time of year again! That joyous time in an oddity blogger’s life when awful religious parephrenalia starts popping up in relation to the holidays (and time for disclaimers about how this blog does not intend to offend or insult anyone’s faith).

The other day I somehow found myself internally exclaiming the phrase Christ Cakes! when someone cut me off in traffic. Don’t ask me why.

But now I give you…CHRIST CAKES!

I encountered a number of images wishing Jesus a happy birthday, like this 1970’s plastic doormat…er…cake. Someone got a little crazy with the star shaped icing tube attachment.

I think I saw this guy at Whole Foods…
