Halloween Countdown: When Gothic Was Born

Posted in halloween, horror, TV with tags , , on October 22, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

I meant to watch this as part of my Halloween season last year, but never got to it. There were a bunch of free full episodes on the BBC website, but when I attempted to play them I got an error message stating that the content is unavailable in my country.

Has anyone seen this series?

Halloween Countdown: Never Sleep Again

A FOUR HOUR documentary on the entire Nightmare on Elm Street legacy? Oh yes…I did.

n

The film opens with awesome stop motion animated renditions of iconic scenes (which are worth watching even if you turn it off after that).

I must admit, I think the FIRST Nightmare is one of the best horror movies ever made. With the possible exception of the third installment, Dream Warriors, I couldn’t stand the way they transformed Freddy from the darkest monster imaginable to a fountain of cheesy one liners and gimmicks. Even the makeup looked plastic and less involved in the latter movies, whereas the original was a glistening mess of gooey fresh wounds.

Still, the entire documentary is quite honest and self aware. Those who hated the sequels will probably feel vindicated. It’s streaming on Netflix at the moment. Recommended for hardcore fans of the genre!

Don’t know the origin of this, but I love the extra written touch.

This kid’s face is not exactly what I’d call “joyful.” At least the trees are happy.

A little macabre for a greeting, no (that pumpkin is crying actual tears while getting murdered). What’s with the gleeful spectators? Is this some kind of Gladiatorial event for squash and…elves?

The source said this is a real Victorian postmortem, but I have trouble believing it’s not doctored. Still…maybe the photographer was just really, REALLY late.

I wish this item hadn’t been taken down for sale/display. I would’ve done a feature post on the crafter of this fine wooden witch carving.

At first it looks like a strange pose, but my black cat Dr. Morbius does this gravity defying move all the time.

Posted in animation, film, halloween, horror with tags , , , on October 9, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

Just in time for Halloween, Extraordinary Tales is hitting theaters. It’s a series of five animated adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe, narrated by some of the greatest horror icons of all time.

Each story is done in a different style of animation. Featured in this film are “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Masque of Red Death” and “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar.” Narrators include Christopher Lee, Roger Corman, Guillermo Del Toro and Bela Lugosi (!!!).

This is not your average Halloween makeup. Are you ready to see some stellar skills and masterful makeup illusions?

The effect itself is great, and I imagine it must be extra surreal to see the human mouth talking within this design.

Halloween Countdown: Top 100 Classic Horror Movies

Posted in film, halloween, horror, monsters, undead with tags , , , , on October 1, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

Welcome to this year’s SWS Halloween Countdown! I thought I’d get things going with a fantastic IMDB list of the Top 100 Classic Horror Movies.

Classic-Horror-Collage

This list covers some excellent classic AND obscure titles, many of which I hope to re-watch this season (I’ve seen about 95 out of 100 on this list, which I’m not sure should be a point of pride or embarrassment…so we’ll call it “alignment with my own passions.”).

How many have you seen? What are your favorites?

Lyme Lags

Posted in announcement, bugs, horror, sci-fi with tags , , , , on July 16, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

I’ve been skipping a bunch of days on SWS recently due to spending every moment of my days in such crushing full body pain that it’s difficult to move…even breathe. It’s utterly indescribable (this is post is punctuated with centipede monsters because a search for “spirochete monsters” turns up nothing).

centipede

This is nothing new. I’ve had pain of this kind without one second of relief for eight years straight. I do my best to push through it, despite being housebound since 2011.

But it has reached unprecedented heights, and there have been massive delays beyond my control and allergies to all of my Lyme Disease treatment options thus far. That’s the worst part…feeling these bugs squeeze the life out of me in the most slow, agonizing way without any major recourse in the immediate future.

Monster_svarog_large

I’ll be attempting to orchestrate treatment through my diagnosing physician on Monday via phone, although he is across the country (it takes months to years to get in with a Lyme literate doctor so I still have months to go despite making an appointment immediately upon diagnosis).

In the meantime, forgive me if I miss a day here and there!
