Lyme Lags

Posted in announcement, bugs, horror, sci-fi with tags , , , , on July 16, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

I’ve been skipping a bunch of days on SWS recently due to spending every moment of my days in such crushing full body pain that it’s difficult to move…even breathe. It’s utterly indescribable (this is post is punctuated with centipede monsters because a search for “spirochete monsters” turns up nothing).

centipede

This is nothing new. I’ve had pain of this kind without one second of relief for eight years straight. I do my best to push through it, despite being housebound since 2011.

But it has reached unprecedented heights, and there have been massive delays beyond my control and allergies to all of my Lyme Disease treatment options thus far. That’s the worst part…feeling these bugs squeeze the life out of me in the most slow, agonizing way without any major recourse in the immediate future.

I’ll be attempting to orchestrate treatment through my diagnosing physician on Monday via phone, although he is across the country (it takes months to years to get in with a Lyme literate doctor so I still have months to go despite making an appointment immediately upon diagnosis).

In the meantime, forgive me if I miss a day here and there!

Apologies for skipping a couple days this week, but between huge health setbacks and mold remediation in the SWS house, things are a bit hectic.

What happened on this beach to necessitate a sign like this (well, I guess that’s self-explanatory).

I’m assuming this is a gag product (the source where I found it said it’s unironic, which was perhaps more entertaining than the ad itself).

Beth Gibbons and Gonga Cover Black Sabbath

Posted in film, horror, monsters, music, music video with tags , , , , on June 29, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

Aside from Beth Gibbon’s haunting vocals (I still adore my old Portishead albums) over Gonga’s sludgy drone metal, this video is so worth watching for horror fans, as it nods to horror classics of yesteryear.

Three words: So. Much. Boris. A little Karloff makes everything better.

The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: An Unlocked Window

Posted in horror, TV, vintage with tags , , on June 7, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

I’ve been back on an Alfred Hitchcock kick lately, and last night I re-watched one of my all time favorite episodes (perhaps of ANY TV show). If you haven’t seen The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: An Unlocked Window, the full episode is on YouTube for free and I highly recommend it.

5557

A group of nurses, caring for an ailing patient, are trapped in an old manor on a stormy night with a notorious nurse killer on the loose outside of the house.

And someone left the basement window unlocked…

aha

Leave it to Hitchcock to take a subject as potentially cliche as “killer on the loose during a storm” and, through masterful direction, lighting and dialogue, turn it into a story no viewer will soon forget. It’s perfectly crafted…and even more amazing the second time with the insight of retrospect illuminating how carefully these scenes were constructed.

This episode should be shown in every film writing class. Watch for yourself!

Russell Dickerson has unique renditions of some horror-lover classic favorites.

The Brundlefly! (Just watched this movie again recently, and decided that “Goldbluming” should be a verb)

Scary Stories: A Documentary

Posted in Books, film, horror with tags , , on April 6, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

As a child, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was one of my all time favorite books (thank you, Stephen Gammell, for the incredible illustration!).

Now, an Indiegogo campaign is raising money for a documentary about the history and controversies surrounding these urban legends. I, for one, would be very excited to see that.
