Image Odyssey: Discontinued Cereals of the 70’s and 80’s

Posted in 70's, 80's, absurd, food, humor, image odyssey, retro with tags , , , , , , , on August 19, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

It’s SO hard to narrow down my search results for this image odyssey. There are legions of bizarre and beloved crunchy, sugary relics to be found. Let’s start with some collages by Like Totally 80’s, where you can also find original commercials. It was all about toy, video games…and doughnuts. Lots of doughnuts. (Click images to enlarge)

What kind of cold hearted freaks could look at Gizmo and cancel this cereal? Look at those eyes! I’d eat a box that’s been sitting around since 1984 if this creature asked me to.

Who remembers Body Buddies? I had these as a kid. I think I believed they were healthy because of the deceptive name (and those awesomely strong kids on the box). Dear World, please notify me when sugary corn puffs become healthy. Thanks.

Barbie? No wonder this failed. Everybody knows she has black coffee and cigarettes for breakfast.

I’m not sure what prompted anyone, ever, to think that grape flavored grains and marshmallows was a good idea. This has to pass…committees and stuff.

I’m sure this got discontinued because no one wanted to bother writing the name on a grocery list. Still, the premise of a robot who shoots out sweetened morsels when tickled was gold.

It’s not cereal, folks. It’s a cereal system, which sounds undeniably sophisticated.

SWS Gift Guide: Stay Puft Marshmallow Mugs

Honor your nostaligic (and/or present) love of Ghostbusters with a Stay Puft Marshmallow Mug!

I love that it has two faces (I don’t love that it’s not microwave safe…because I’m lazy when it comes to heating beverages).

80’s Christmas Horror Movies

Posted in 80's, film, horror, monsters, TV, undead with tags , , , , , , on December 8, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

Fellow horror fans…I confess I felt remiss in my duties when I discovered there were a number of 80’s Christmas Horror Movies I haven’t seen. A kind reader sent me this list.

static1.squarespace.com

Luckily, 80’s Horror has compiled a nice list of every Christmas horror movie made in the decade. How many have you seen?

They also note two awesome TV episodes (which were staples of my childhood): Tales from the Darkside- Seasons of Belief

And Tales from the Crypt- And All Through the House

Halloween Countdown: Never Sleep Again

Posted in 80's, film, halloween, horror, monsters with tags , , , , on October 12, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

A FOUR HOUR documentary on the entire Nightmare on Elm Street legacy? Oh yes…I did.

n

The film opens with awesome stop motion animated renditions of iconic scenes (which are worth watching even if you turn it off after that).

feed_001_08_X1_0101

I must admit, I think the FIRST Nightmare is one of the best horror movies ever made. With the possible exception of the third installment, Dream Warriors, I couldn’t stand the way they transformed Freddy from the darkest monster imaginable to a fountain of cheesy one liners and gimmicks. Even the makeup looked plastic and less involved in the latter movies, whereas the original was a glistening mess of gooey fresh wounds.

Still, the entire documentary is quite honest and self aware. Those who hated the sequels will probably feel vindicated. It’s streaming on Netflix at the moment. Recommended for hardcore fans of the genre!

Anyone born around the same time I was, or before, will likely get a twinge of nostalgia when looking at Hollis Brown Thornton’s work. His images made with permanent marker are my favorite:

The Day My Kid Went Punk

Posted in 80's, absurd, humor, TV, video with tags , , , , on November 23, 2014 by shewalkssoftly

I missed this Afterschool Special growing up, but it’s truly a (temporary spray-on hair color covered) gem. I highly recommend it.

1416350593-0

Terry, the leading man, transforms instantaneously in an airport bathroom from an awkward orchestra geek to the world’s most innocuous punk. Is the resulting appearance-based prejudice he encounters a warning for parents to keep their children from going down this “bad” path, or a commentary on a shallow, judgmental society*?

*They make a point of having Terry save the day for a sad little girl with leg braces…by somehow materializing a doll with identical leg braces…while at a horse stable, after her mother is denied permission to just “strap her to a horse.” I’m not kidding.

Only one thing is certain: the special is entirely ineffective, and quite marvelously fails, at any of its possible aims. In other words: watch this ASAP.

Forbidden Transmission

I try not to post long videos here. I understand that everyone is busy (and I personally rarely take the time to watch lengthy videos I come across while browsing online…even if they look interesting). BUT…children of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s…these are worth your time.

The creators have taken (often embarrassing, highly dated, yet in some cases enjoyably nostalgic) clips from bygone TV days and edited them together in themed compilations. I laughed out loud multiple times.

Do not miss the video that begins at 8:00 in Cultural Meltdown. I ferociously googled the lyrics to find out more about this song and nothing came up. But look and listen!

Yeah, that’s the nature of the beast
Keeper of the male persona
Yeah that’s the nature of the beast
Keeper of my status quota

“Status quota?” What does that even mean? Don’t you want to rush to the 8 minute mark now?

There are a bunch of others I intend to watch as well! Thank you, GD, for finding these!
