  • Antique Fitness Equipment

    January 1st, 2011

Here’s a little something for the folks who list fitness goals as part of their New years resolution; a glance back at some antique fitness equipment.

Before you judge…consider some of the ludicrous contraptions we have on the market today:

    The Shake Weight

    The Cardio Twister

    The Love Handler

    And remember the Thigh-Master?

    The Gazelle?

Want abs? You can try the Abroller, Abcoaster, Abrocket, Abdoer, Abcircle, Abflyer, Ab Slide, Ab Belt, Smart Abs, AB FORCE…you get the idea. We’re surrounded by the fitness kitsch of the future!

  • Celestial Combo Dress

    December 31st, 2010

On principle, I’m opposed to spending close to $2,000 for a simple dress. But this Celestial Combo Dress is giving me some ideas about what I might be able to make for myself…

I vow to make a celestial cocktail dress for under $20. It can be done.

  • Snow Pencil Sketches

    December 31st, 2010

Fellow North Easterners, let’s take a small break from describing recent weather with suffixes like “pocalyse” and “ageddon” and look at few sketches that remind us how gorgeous snow can be…when we don’t have to deal with it personally.

Since I am unable to speak or read Russian, I can’t impart any info about this artist. Just sit back and enjoy the view.

I’m posting some of the larger landscape sketches, but there are a number of “close ups” which also demonstrate amazing depictions of light and detail.

Nature, it its cruel indifference, is really quite breathtaking…

    Many more here.

  • Time/Life: Science/Library

    December 30th, 2010

Dan Funderburgh has designed a series of wallpapers and prints based on vintage scientific images.

Looking at the large wallpaper panels nearly made me hyperventilate (why do I experience the covetous lust for scientific art that most women feel toward shoes and handbags?).

Hang on…I’m still fantasizing about having one of these panels in my house…perhaps this one (such subtle brilliance!)…

“The work of a scientist is based on the conviction that nature is basically orderly. Evidence to support this faith can be seen with the naked eye – in the design of a honeycomb or a mollusk’s shell – but scientists seek and discover patterns at every level of being. – The Scientist, Henry Margenau. This series of prints and wallpapers is an interpretation of the Time Science Library – 25 books that were published between 1964 and 1967 on topics such as ‘Energy’ ,’Matter’, and ‘The Mind’. The work is a recognition of the art of knowledge and of the poetry of things we do not and can not know. It’s also a tribute to my parents who are biochemists and my grandfather – an engineer who left me the books.” – Dan Funderburgh.

  • Xetobyte

    December 29th, 2010

These surrealist photo manipulations are the work of 20 year old Xetobyte.

His images bend the laws of time and space, manipulating reality into dark, somber (and at times subversive) dreamscapes.

We find many implicit and explicit references to the passage of time, introversion, isolation, enlightenment, illumination, music, ascension, breaking boundaries and shifted perception.

He manages to capture the essence of complex emotions in a single, frozen image.

  • Vintage Club Pins

    December 28th, 2010

Golden Age Comic Book Stories just posted a nice collection of pins and buttons, dating back to the 1930’s.

Surely these are prized collector’s items at this point.

Before the digital age it must have been quite exciting for kids to fill out that little order form, clipped from a comic book, and wait for their special treats in the mail.

See more (including airline pins) here.

  • How Science Saved My Soul

    December 27th, 2010

I do not follow any form of organized religion. However, science often leaves me humbled, awestruck and downright ecstatic. Musing about how all things are materially and energetically interconnected in the vast scheme of the universe brings me a kind of meditative peace there is no real word for (as the following video aptly points out).

Science and spirituality are one and the same to me, so I find the separation of these matters baffling. I am in what I gather to be a minority: those who worship reality and find “soul” in harmonious complexities of nature and properties of energy.

This video does a nice job of presenting my case (yes, it is 15 minutes long, but I highly recommend it to all with an interest in the wonders of science).

We are so very small and insignificant. Yet, with the incomprehensible particles, patterns and occurrences in the universe…simply existing at this place in time is miraculous.

  • Christmas Remainders

    December 26th, 2010

The holidays had some unexpected challenges in store for me this year (including hospitalized family, and what may be the largest data loss of my entire electronic life, if my paid backup service fails me). I’m trying to stay positive, so instead of lamenting anything quite yet, I’ll simply go ahead and give you a belated Christmas collection of links I had marked.

    Incredible paper cut snowflakes

    Skullflake!

Amazing Galaxy Science Fiction Christmas covers

    The Grinch print

A great collection of gingerbread creations

    Santa’s cinematic debut

Simon’s Cat: Santa Claws (I had the pleasure of watching two new cats “discover” a Christmas tree this year…this video pretty much captures it all):

    Lego Robot Santa!

    DIY art magazine gift bows

I hope you all had fantastic holidays…whatever and however you celebrate!

  • Thrift Santas

    December 24th, 2010

Today I give you the results of this year’s Web scouring for the most absurd and disconcerting thrift store renditions of Santa Claus.

    Because eyes are overrated anyway…

    Especially anatomically correct eyes.

Actually, who needs a face, period?

When you have a face, things like THIS can happen:

He sees you when you’re sleeping, kiddies…

    “Very superstitious…writings on the wall…”

I sense tragic comedy waiting to happen if THIS fellow ever attempted toy delivery:

No, this is not an intentional “craftastrophe.” I promise. It was found at a regular market (in the Twilight Zone?).

What? Santa is secure enough in his masculinity to wear pink and glow.

This post was brought to you by MAYBELLINE JESUS!
