  • Paige Bradley: Expansion

    June 30th, 2011

As much as I dislike posting things that have gotten too much attention around the Web already, every time I see Paige Bradley’s Expansion sculpture, I’m re-captivated.

This piece contains such harmony of design, medium and message. It is a woman meditating in lotus position. Realizing that fine-tuned figure work had lost its sway in the art world in recent years, Bradley literally LET GO of the piece, willingly allowing it shatter. She then cast it in bronze and arranged for the inner lighting fixtures.

The very act of meditating involves releasing the structures we create and being open to what emerges from within. I can think of no better way to demonstrate that concept artistically.

Let this be a lesson to us all to let things crack and open to expansion when the time is right. Sometimes we have to release our own rigid structures, no matter how long we’ve worked to cultivate and perfect them (I personally have enjoyed some of my finest moment when dropping some of my own stubbornness!). We never know what light lurks beneath the surface.

Just a few shots from Bookshelf Porn, an archive of lovely libraries.

    These bring back memories…

Fellow biliophiles, have a peek at the archives.

  • Vogue Sav-Way Picture Records

    June 28th, 2011

Ah…remember when art and music actually went together? If you’re my age, you do. But here’s something I was not around for: picture records.

    From the source:
Vogue picture records are phonograph records on the “Vogue” label which have a picture (an artist’s illustration) embedded in the transparent vinyl of the record.

The illustrations on each side of the record are usually related to the title of the song on that side. Many of the illustrations are mushy romantic themes (see the discography).

The most common Vogue picture records are 10-inch, 78 RPM records, although a few 12-inch, 78 RPM Vogue picture records were also produced.

Vogue picture records were produced by Sav-Way Industries of Detroit, Michigan. The first 10-inch Vogue picture record (catalog number R707) was released to the public in May 1946. Production ceased less than a year later in April 1947, with Sav-Way entering into receivership in August 1947. During this time, approximately seventy-four different 10-inch Vogue picture records were released.

These rare little things are awesome! I wish this idea had gone mainstream.

  • Beautiful Breakup Ceremony

    June 27th, 2011

I think this is a lovely complement to yesterday’s celebration of matrimony: a romantic breakup ceremony.

Xu Minyu and Xiao Ying, two Chinese students, enjoyed a happy relationship throughout their four years in college. However, careers pulled them in different directions upon graduation so they decided to hold a gorgeous public breakup (reminiscent of a grandiose wedding proposal).

Not all relationships end with anger, betrayal or bitterness. Sometimes two good people who love each other must separate because of location, life goals, wanting (or not wanting) children, etc. Fairy tales teach us that love is always enough for a Happily Ever After. But in real life, when this is not possible, why not celebrate the beauty of the union? Of course, not everyone must do this in public with lights and dozens of roses…but I like the idea behind paying tribute to what a loved one has contributed to our existence.

  • Jewish Marriage Contracts

    June 26th, 2011

In honor of my home state now allowing gay marriage (a measure that brings us one small yet much-needed step closer to honoring the basic rights of every human being), I give you a beautiful series of antique Jewish marriage contracts from around the world.

For those who think marriage is “just a piece of paper,” this tradition certainly makes the most of it! The artistry is incredible. I don’t know what the contract states, but I’m going to pretend it’s something amazing and sublimely meaningful to the particular partnership it commemorates.

Think about it. You could immortalize your own vows and promises in calligraphic glory on parchment, whether you wish to say that you are two halves of a single soul…or that you won’t leave dirty dishes in the sink.

My dear roommate and I were recently talking about how various friendships could even benefit from some sort of formalized written understanding.

In all seriousness, everyone should be allowed to pursue love and happiness, and to have it recognized in the eyes of whatever government, God or Flying Spaghetti Monster they choose. NY…may your actions be the first of MANY steps in a global effort to honor humanity without judgment.

  • The Traveling Elvis Museum and Chapel of Love

    June 25th, 2011

I’ve been meaning to post about The Elvis Mobile for ages now.

This amazing vehicle is the brainchild and handiwork of two of the coolest people I’ve ever met: Jo David and Marlow Harris, of Unusual Life.

It started as a simple whim (Marlow presented a sketch as a joke…Jo made it happen), and there’s nothing I love more than when whims become reality.

See guys? If you can dream it up…you can do it! It just take a little elbow grease, and the occasional VW van.

This mini museum on wheels is a functional shrine, chapel, and brilliantly executed kitsch masterpiece (available for events upon request!).

Read an article about the museum’s creation here.

You can follow the adventures of the Traveling Elvis Mobile here and see a large photo gallery on facebook.

  • Lena and Katya Popova

    June 24th, 2011

A few years ago I came across this doll photo set and left it in my “to post” folder.

To this day, I still can’t find much about Lena and Katya Popova’s mixed media doll creations (except other blog posts referencing this same set). Nevertheless, they are unique and beautiful.

I love the incorporation of lamp materials (some of which actually light up).

See the rest of the set here.

  • Skeleton Diagram Scarf

    June 22nd, 2011

I really should just order this right now (the price is quite reasonable), but instead it’s going on my wish list for a later date.

I love this Skeleton Diagram Scarf from Gorey Details.

100% cotton with medieval skeleton print. Classy. Understated. Lovely.

  • F*ckin’ TEA!

    June 21st, 2011

I’m deviating from my usual blog fare for this little gem. NSFW due to language, but the subject matter is about as safe for work as it gets.

Absolutely hilarious! Send this to all the men you know who may feel that drinking tea is a tad effeminate.

    “DON’T SLURP! IT’S RUDE!”

  • Father’s Day

    June 19th, 2011

Hey Dad…I have the wonderfullest thing for you today:

Every word of last year’s Fathers Day post remains true…

Today I’d like to like to honor my dad, who is truly one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever known. This man has been a stellar role model of compassion, responsibility and integrity, who continues to inspire me on a daily basis. I owe so much of who I am, and anything I may achieve in the future, to his love and guidance.

It’s a rare person (and a rare parent) who can seamlessly blend rationality and emotion, regulation and freedom, wish and possibility. He selflessly provided so much, yet taught me to take nothing for granted. From him, I learned to hope for great things…yet never balk at working hard to get them. I learned that love is not only words, but the genuine desire to make someone’s world a better place, honoring their needs with equal (if not more) importance than one’s own.

Dad, not a day goes by that I don’t appreciate the hell out of you! May I go forward in this world with the values you have taught me and make you proud…

I like this card. I think I could still do this and my dad would barely feel it! (by Dear Nic)

    Dad…you’re #1…and the World’s Greatest.
