Nightmare in Wonderland

Posted in art, exhibits with tags , on March 2, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

Let’s just take a moment to absorb the greatness of the title alone: Nightmare in Wonderland. This project is a an artistic tribute to Tim Burton that takes place in four outstanding group art shows.

nw1

Part 0 is available for online viewing (currently showing at Rotofugi).

nw3

The series is curated by Ixie Darkonn (assisted by my amazing Art Twin, Jo David, of MIROIR Magazine).

nw2

I’m incredibly impressed by the first show. They’ve already managed to gather a highly commendable roster of Pop Surrealism’s greatest artists. Never have greyscale paintings looked so alive!
nw4

I can’t take my eyes off these paintings and will be eagerly keeping up with the next installments.

The Museum of Alchemists and Magicians

I’ve always wanted to visit Prague, and on my list of attractions in the area is The Museum of Alchemists and Magicians.

Oh hey, little feline buddy! Cats and all, this is my kind of alchemy lab. Let’s take a tiny peek inside, shall we?

According to the website, here, you can look under the lids of bowls of emperor Rudolf’s alchemists. At first you will immerse in the wisdom texts of the alchemists, alchemy and personalities associated with alchemy, whether the alchemists themselves, or unexpected examples as Charles IV or William Shakespeare.

You are going to walk through a magical room of the Faust´s house and then, subtly initiated, you will climb the spiral of life up to the sky. By the „spiral of life“ we mean the spiral staircase bulit by Kelley in the 16th century, and almost in heaven, in the attic between the beams from the times of Rudolf II, you will find the authentic atmosphere of the laboratory of one of the most famous alchemists of Rudolphine times, the master Edward Kelley, who lived in this house.

I have a sneaking suspicion that at least part of my house will look exactly like the picture below about 10 years from now. That’s the direction it’s heading. I’m not a hoarder (no really!)…I’m an aspiring alchemist.

I will, however, stop short of emblazoning giant glyphs on my floor. Ceilings, of course, are fair game.

There is also an alchemical lab PUB on the premises! Click to enlarge photo (Formulas on the walls! Glorious!).

Jon Neill deserves his own post for his fabulous carvings (but alas he will have to share it with some links). Incredible designs:

I just got engrossed in Haunted Overload for too long. It is an attraction filled with beautifully wicked things to look at, and their use of ambient lighting perfectly compliments the props and scenery.

Halloween Countdown: The Doll Asylum

Here we have a great reader submission: The Doll Asylum.

From the staff:
Welcome to the Doll Asylum. We are a place for the old, the decrepit, the forgotten…the insane. We try to ‘fix’ those we can, and provide a place of refuge for those we can’t.
556095_463604050340396_1049519851_n

Founded in 1867 by German Dr. Hermann Reinhardt, the Doll Asylum’s purpose was to receive dolls who were abandoned, neglected, or most importantly, showing signs of psychotic or murderous behavior.

298373_282199441814192_246634901_n

Doll Maker by hobby, Dr. Reinhardt thought he could bridge the gap between the inanimate and animate and stomp out the dark thoughts that lay beneath.

While no true success was to be had in his day, Dr. Reinhardt did establish a home for those unwanted creatures and in doing so, has protected society at large.

We continue that tradition and throw open our doors to the public 4 days a year to show what his good work has wrought. We cannot guarantee your safety or mind or spirit, but we will have cookies.

Has anyone in Portland gone here?

Naoto Hattori has a new show at the Dorothy Circus Gallery.

As I struggle to think of fitting descriptions for his work, the word “cyborganic” comes to mind. It’s not a real word. I made it up. But I’m sticking with it.

Though not quite for the faint of heart, the group show going on at Modern Eden Gallery right now is definitely worth checking out for those who can attend.
