Vintage Valentines: Ghosts, Witches and Skeletons

Nowadays, zombies and whatever sparkly things pass for vampires are all the rage. But in the mid 20th century, some GENIUS decided to mix Valentine’s Day with the best of all holidays…Halloween.

Personally, I like spooky elements in ALL of my special occasions. I put bats on my Christmas tree and skeletons on birthday greetings (you get the idea).

I wish there were more like these.

Sweet little specters…

Witchy women…

See, my dirty mind with the skeleton valentines would have written, “Feel my bone, you’re my valentine!” And there are obviously countless other ways to go with that straight into the gutter.

    • I assure you, Spider, this is perfectly natural. I have roughly 1,000 vintage valentines and about 80% of them engender bad inappropriate puns in my mind.

  2. Though I like some of the other designs better, the “Let’s Be Valentines for Centuries!” sentiment is very sweet.

And the bats on “You Haunt Me! Valentine” are just about the cutest thing ever. :)

But what’s up with the witch holding the heart with the girls face on it? It looks like her jaw moves, is she supposed to be eating it? Talking to it?

    • Haha…if the witch is supposed to be eating the girl, I’d have to put that one in my “cannibalism” Valentine folder (which I do have!).

  3. I love your spooky-centric collection of Valentines! I can imagine at one time there was a cool set sold with a spooky theme.

  4. Whenever I see vintage Valentines that I don’t have, it feels like Christmas! These are soooo fun!
