Courtney Brown: Tentacle Typewriter

Posted in craft, sculpture, sea, steampunk with tags , , , on November 15, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

This sculpture has been showing up everywhere (in my circle of sources, anyway)…for good reason. Who wouldn’t love a 1938 Underwood typewriter bursting with sculpted bronze tentacles?

She does a beautiful job of matching the suckers on the tentacles to the typewriter keys. It’s a very cohesive creature.

Bez: Android Tattoo

I’ve seen a number of gear, machinery and various android stylings in tattoo art, but perhaps none so unique as this brightly colored gem from Bez at Triplesix Studios:

Such a strange and beautiful combination of manufactured material and otherworldly organic matter.

Jarosław Jaśnikowski has a portfolio of colorful, complex surrealist pieces.

This odd human/angler fish prison is one of my favorites.

Architecture, vehicles, human faces and forms fuse together in strange worlds that defy the laws of physics.

I think many of these paintings would be a hit in the steampunk community.

Steampunk Mountain Lamp

Thanks to Ulrike for showing me this lovely lamp.

This one-of-a-kind table lamp is expertly crafted from a perfect amalgamation of modern electrical components and upcycled vintage and antique materials. It is comprised almost entirely of brass, steel, copper, glass and iron (it’s very heavy). Flip the switch for the eerie plasma light effect, and then push the left shift key to turn on the incandescent lights.

The proliferation of steampunk modifications out there has made me pretty picky…but I think this one is a very worthy effort.

Ready for the best grill you’ve seen in a good long while?

Ryazan Deulino’s amazing 4-ton locomotive barbecue pit has three bays and a brick-lined furnace. Some of the controls in the cab are functional, too! The wheel turns the rotating spit. All aboard!

Donovan Design has come out with a series of wonderful steampunk lamps. As many of you know, I am loathe to use the term steampunk, but will always give credit where credit is due in terms of fine craftsmanship.

I can’t help liking certain aesthetics of the subculture I can’t entirely get behind. Story of my life, as a kaleidoscope of selected subcultural pieces!

I wouldn’t mind a few of these beauties gracing my home in various places (“wouldn’t mind” is quite an extreme understatement).
