When someone says “Go to hell!” do they mean THIS PLACE?
The Door to Hell, as locals call it, is situated near the small town of Darvaz in Uzbekistan. Thirty-five years ago, geologists were drilling for gas when then encountered a very large cavern underground filled with a poisonous gas. They ignited the gas expecting it to burn off in a few hours. Thirty-five years later, the gas is still burning.

Joshua Hoffine has an impressive series of archetypal nightmare photographs, embellished with wonderful shadows, fog and eerie glow. He aptly describes his work as “hyper-realism.”
It’s definitely worth going to his site and taking in his renditions of the supercharged moment just before the arrival of impending doom.
