I’m sure I have a ton of less-than-functional umbrellas lying around the house, but I never quite thought to do this with them. Interesting lighting fixture…

A few years ago I vowed to have an fantastic 11/11/11 celebration. I saved a piece of paper with a stunning display at the now defunct Tavern on the Green in NYC, because it seemed the ideal place to host such a thing.
I could get lost in those photos. Something about them is absolutely magical, like stepping into another world.
But since Ronnie informed me that 12/31/09 was Tavern on the Green’s final night, I will have to find a new location. The other day I came across this photo which made me feel a bit better about the challenge. I would actually love to replicate a scene like this in my back yard, and I think it’s entirely possible.
11/11/11 is saved! Or at least now carries with it a new possibility.

I’ve had Kate MacDowell bookmarked for a while, and I’ve looked at her gallery at least three or four times this week.
Her sculptures are stunning blends of anatomy and nature. Slightly macabre, always thought provoking…
AND, some can be illuminated for extra effect.

You may remember the cassette tape lamps I posted. Now here is one made of speakers, by Georgiosi. Who knew discarded musical paraphernalia would aid in the creation of fantastic lighting?

This one isn’t the most practical lamp, but it’s pretty neat anyway.
Under the picture’s on the creator’s site is this little rhyme:
Twinkle twinkle little speakers
Shedding shadows from their tweeters
Lost and found
I’ll bound them round
Shining a light that makes a sound

Uh oh, I feel a craft project coming on! I’m sure my wonderful housemate will be on board for this one since we are both media freaks (who probably have thousands of old tapes collectively).
Ooo My Design featured these fantastic cassette lamps:

Not only do I love the idea of recycling old media that had meaning for me, but the lighting effect is gorgeous. I definitely have to make one…or many.

Laura Adel Johnson is a multimedia artist who constructs portraits out of miniature lights.

Two years ago, she found herself inspired by gaudy yet strangely beautiful holiday displays. She began using this medium primarily to depict catalog models, feeling the artificiality of the lights was a fitting representation for the subject matter.

I love the way the illuminated tears spill to the ground and run together in glowing pools. The idea of “crying light” is somehow beautiful to me.

This clip is under a minute long, and definitely worth watching. A group of college students turned their dorm into a giant light show to the tune of classic 80’s TV show Knight Rider:

This one is for my fellow crafters who love tea. I give you a somewhat literal version of Tea Lights:

I think this would make a dynamite lighting scheme for a cozy coffee house or bakery. I’d love to see a bunch of teacup lights hanging above my table.

(It still works as a home lighting fixture, but I like when public places get creative with their decor). -
1 Light Art Lamps are a collection of unique lamps made from everyday objects. Designer Howard Dernberger has been creating lamps since he was a child, and he incorporates rare vintage objects for a blend of form and function.
Among my favorites are the typewriter and camera lamp:

I’m often struck with the desire to create odd lighting pieces from found objects, and it’s lovely to see the creativity and construction in these pieces.
See the gallery.
And speaking of lighting, don’t miss the Gizmodo post about these Jellyfish lamps:

Fabio Fornasier makes unique and exquisite chandeliers out of hand blown glass.

Each one is a different color and shape. They almost resemble swans in the throes of ecstasy…

Or deep sea creatures…
