Greg Simkins: Inside the Outside

I’ve been a fan of Greg “Craola” Simkins for many years. I’m hoping I can make it to his new solo show at the Joshua Liner Gallery before the end of the month.

From the show intro:

Simkins alternates between the unsettling and the sentimental—in his finely rendered work, the grotesque can turn sweet and vice versa. Fanged caterpillars become sad-eyed clowns, grow machine parts, or inflate into bulbous balloons that sprout other bizarre creatures and beings. Simkins’ vision weaves together influences as diverse as contemporary pop culture, twentieth- entury fantasy novels, old master paintings, carnival kitsch, and cyborgian amalgams of technology and nature.

Ryan Heshka: Strange Powers

Word of the new Ryan Heshka solo show at Chicago’s Rotofugi Gallery has been circulating quite a bit lately.

I’m a fan of Heshka’s work, so I was pretty happy to see this new collection of pulpy monster-superhero madness!

I think he should print a series of Strange Powers trading cards. Wouldn’t that be a perfect collector’s micro-portfolio?

Another Dimension

Gallery 1988 currently has a big tribute show to one of my all time favorite TV programs: The Twilight Zone!

Another Dimension is a huge group show, filled with pieces inspired by the series.

I enjoyed going through them, seeing if I could place the episodes that inspired each painting. A few classic episodes were bound to be chosen quite often, but some rarer ones crept in there as well.

I would have loved to see something from Elegy or Monsters are Due on Maple Street.

I Need Your Skull

I can’t believe I will most likely have to miss the opening reception of I Need Your Skull next week at Brooklyn’s MF Gallery. It’s a collection of skull themed art, with some truly awesome participants.

I owe the gifted Angie Mason a cupcake! Raincheck, my dear…

Mark Ryden: The Gay 90’s

I’ve been remiss in posting about one of this year’s highlights: Mark Ryden’s Gay 90’s Exhibit. I don’t want to inundate you folks with countless pictures so I’ll post a few with a link to others.

The giant show stopper, Incarnation. This painting was massive and breathtaking.

In person, these paintings have a surreal vibrancy that is slightly lost on film.

The frames were custom made for each painting. The added detail is superb.

There was a second room filled with non-oil pieces (and a third filled with concept sketches). This one particularly caught my eye:

Stilts and meat costumes…what more does an art opening need?

The wall of inspirational materials was really fun to look at.

Sophie Cave: Floating Heads

Walk into the stately Victorian Kelvingrove Art Gallery and you’ll be confronted with a truly unique site: countless floating heads in a myriad of expressions, by Sophie Cave.

I would love to walk under this series of sculpted apparitions. Are they the ghosts of former reactions that took place in the front hall?

These expressive masks are fascinating because they capture a single moment in time, usually fleeting in real life. Faces are forever transforming as we navigate our daily existence…except here.

Apparently some people find the faces unnerving, perhaps because these moments are so rarely frozen and de-contextualized. I happen to think they are fantastic.

Gris Grimly at Hyaena Gallery

Gris Grimly makes adorable spooky art. I wish I could have had books with his illustrations as a child (he does do children’s books). Now he has a show of black and white work at the Hyaena Gallery in LA.

Great Edgar Allen Poe pieces…

I don’t think it was the intention, but I like to call this one “Vampire Iggy Pop:”

Dino Snores

Why is Dino Snores only for children? A sleepover in London’s Natural History Museum sounds fantastic!

Dino Snores is suitable for children aged 8-11 years old. Accompanying adults are free. There must be a minimum of 5 children and 1 adult in your group.

Experience lots of thrilling activities and stalk the corridors as night descends and shrouds the huge hulking form of Tyrannosaurus Rex in shadows.

Activities include:
* a torch-lit tour of some of our famous galleries including the Dinosaurs
* snuggling down at midnight after the fun in the shadow of our Central Hall Diplodocus skeleton for the night.

The morning after, tuck into breakfast and other fun activities before the Museum opens its doors to the public.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Workshop

Has anyone been to see Leonardo Da Vinci’s Workshop at Discovery Times Square in NYC?

Exhibition features:

Full scale models of Da Vinci’s inventions including his self-propelled cart, airplane, robot knight and mechanical lion

Innovative touch screen technology translates over 500 sketches from his actual notebooks into 3-dimensional models

Da Vinci’s most important paintings can now be viewed using avant-garde technologies and extensive 3D imaging and animations

I’ve seen Discovery Channel specials about building Leonardo’s contraptions based on his sketches, but I think it would be rather interesting to see these models in person.

The exhibition closes March 14th. If you see it, please let me know how it is!

The LOST Underground Art Show

Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in LA now has a large of exhibit of art inspired by the TV show Lost.

Even though I don’t follow the series, I enjoyed looking at some of these pieces. I’d imagine they are extra enjoyable for die hard fans of the show.
