I’ve been slightly negligent with the blog for standard holiday reasons, but I should be back full force tomorrow. In the meantime, please enjoy this snowman. I’m very entertained by his claim of invincibility. Doesn’t anyone have a match? A hair dryer?

Golden Age Comic Book Stories has an awesome collection of sci-fi Christmas illustrated covers by Ed Emshwiller.
I love this series so much. See the rest here.

PARA ABNORMAL is grimly adorable all the time, but the Halloween comics have been great.
I’ve often thought my jack-o-lanterns might secretly be tortured.
Smarties get a bad rap here. They’re not THAT bad. I personally feel it should have been one of those hideous Brach’s hard candies sitting there in place of Smarties (no offense to those who like them, or hand them out…but they were always the massive disappointments of my treat bag). Candy Corns? Yeah, you’re awful.
Even the comics not strictly intended for Halloween are quite appropriate for the season.
There’s also some style variation. How fantastic is this rural zombie scene?

Golden Age Comic Book Stories recently ran a feature on little-known pulp illustrator Boris Dolgov. In the 1940’s and 50’s, his work appeared in Weird Tales magazine.
I wish more of Dolgov’s work were available. See a few more here.

I’m fascinated by random cultural explosions that take place around arbitrary objects. Bacon has become a veritable phenomenon over the past two years, and I’m noticing steady growth of the toast trend.
I’ll refrain from posting images of pictures burned into toast…it’s been done ad nauseum. I will, however, show you this meta-toast mosaic:
It’s not just an emergence of toast products I’ve noticed (such as Tic Tac Toast, toast bandages or the toast clock). Toast is gaining a personality.
Now let’s enjoy some brief nostalgia.
In 1989, After Dark introduced the Flying Toast Screensaver (first for Mac, later for Windows):
Later, Sims Carnival allowed for more intergalactic toast possibilities.
Who can forget the 1990’s pioneer of these crumbly, starchy heroes, POWDERED TOAST MAN?
High-velocity raisins, corrosive croutons, acidic marmalade, flying butter pats…and of course, flight. He had it all.
Years later, we meet Mr. Toast and his mini empire.
There are countless variations of Mr. Toast images and products. Personally, I’m a fan of Vampire Toast:
(Love the shiny cape…very classy)Slightly more menacing is this toast from one of my favorite web comics.
Never thought toast could be sad? Well, My Paper Crane proves that it can be, if aware of its ominous scorching fate.
If you prefer your toast enraged and screaming, you can now purchase a Mini Toast Pocket Friend:
In fact, angry toast does seem to be all the rage (pun intended).
There was even a design contest based on the concept.
But wait! Not all toast is tragic!
Look at Senor Happy Toast, gleefully self-buttering:
And my own soft toast creations, circa 2006 (and part of a complete plush breakfast) were pretty happy too:
Yummy Pancake’s Mr Toastee flickr set runs the whole gamut.
Happy…
Dressed up…
Drunk…
Whole wheat, original and rye (together in perfect harmony)…
Some modern toast creations include bizarre, counter-intuitive designs like this Soft Toaster Cell Phone Holder, complete with bear face and ears:
(The toast, also with a face, is supposed to “wipe off” the phone…wonder if it’s large enough for touch screen phones)Are you…
(Image source link now dead)What are your feelings about the growing Cult of Toast?

Now here’s an artistic mashup I can appreciate. To celebrate Wolverine’s 35th anniversary, Marvel Comics is showcasing a series of covers featuring the character as he might have been interpreted by renowned artists.
Matt P. sent me this wonderful Edward Gorey style piece (I’m taking his clever email subject header as my post title, too):

I’ve been meaning to post my favorite Danilo Beyruth image for a while, but was reminded when my ice cream socks arrived today (yes, I gave in and bought them).
I have never seen such an intensely tortured ice cream soul. This cone has descended into full-on agonizing madness. You can almost hear him screaming.
More from Danilo Beyruth.

I just saw a post featuring Alex Schomburg on what will undoubtedly become a new blog addiction: Golden Age of Comic Book Stories.
Although Schomburg draws in many styles, these are among my favorites.
(Currently enjoying the above image as desktop wallpaper)Can’t wait to see more Golden Age Comic Book Stories!

I think after Pan’s Labyrinth I’ll see any Guillermo del Toro project. In the wake of this fantastic monster I can’t wait to see what he does with the new Hellboy characters.
Wired recently featured an article on the film realizations of Hellboy sketches, and the book chronicling the collaboration of Del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
