  • Alana Corra

    November 16th, 2013

My dear friend Bettie sent me the link to Alana Corra’s work.

This doll is my favorite. It reminds me of instructional antique anatomical models.

  • The AntiCraft: Bat Shawl

    November 14th, 2013

I’ve already mentioned my love of hidden darkness. The AntiCraft has posted a bat shawl that has me once again wishing I knew how to knit.

What a perfect age-appropriate accessory for the classy lady with a penchant for creatures of the night.

  • Much Loved

    November 12th, 2013

Much Loved is a book containing portraits of stuffed animals; beloved pets of children who adored them into gorgeous ruin.

    ml3-300x385

This series serves as a great reminder of meaning and symbolism. The objects I’ve imbued with most significance in my life were never the ones that cost a lot…they were simple treasures. In a culture so drenched in materialism, adults tend to lose sight of the magnificent magic of loving something with no value, save for where it comes from or how it makes us feel.

    ml6

These remind me of a passage from The Velveteen Rabbit:

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
    ― Margery Williams

(Jim, that one’s for you, your lovely wife and baby girl!)

  • Ant-Winged Fruitfly

    November 11th, 2013

Now an awe-striking example of nature’s savvy design:

    AR-3072899801

A recently discovered G tridens fruitfly that has evolved a to have images of detailed, ant-like insects on each wing, complete with six legs, a thorax, antennae and a tapered abdomen. The fly uses the images defensively, waving them back and forth when threatened to create the illusion of massing ants.

    Dear Evolution,

You blow my mind. Well played.

    Love,
    Dana

  • Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities

    November 9th, 2013

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities has me drooling with anticipation!

    del-toro-cabinet-of-curiosities-book-cover1

Over the last two decades, writer-director Guillermo del Toro has mapped out a territory in the popular imagination that is uniquely his own, astonishing audiences with Cronos, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and a host of other films and creative endeavors. Now, for the first time, del Toro reveals the inspirations behind his signature artistic motifs, sharing the contents of his personal notebooks, collections, and other obsessions.

The result is a startling, intimate glimpse into the life and mind of one of the world’s most creative visionaries. Complete with running commentary, interview text, and annotations that contextualize the ample visual material, this deluxe compendium is every bit as inspired as del Toro is himself.

  • Window to the past ~ Budapest Kerényi Zoltán

    November 8th, 2013

Posted by proxy on a rough day, while health matters persist. Dana can still see your comments, but cannot reply. Thanks for your continuing presence here!

These images of Budapest are simply wonderful juxtapositions of old and new, (nearly) seamlessly brought to life by Kerényi Zoltán. Marvel at the effort it took to find the same place of the original photos in order to inset the old photos.
