Hobo Nickels have seen a renewed interest in recent years. In the Great Depression, many hobos worked over nickels, creating folk art. The history goes back earlier, and you can read more here. Today SWS shares the talent of Mr. The Hobo Nickels. What is especially appealing to collectors on a shoestring budget is his affordable plastic replicas, like the three at the bottom.
(thank you Mr. Hitchcock!) “Dear friends and followers, I disappeared last week b/c I was rushed into emergency surgery (a major open surgery procedure, unfortunately). I’m still in the hospital and will be recovering for quite a while. Bear with me and my little sliced up guts! I’ll get back to posting ASAP!”
Thanks Everyone, for continued support and Energy. I will be Dana’s acting fingers for posts, but rest assured it shall be her whimsy and spirit that guides the posts–though this one is done as a nod to her spirit while I await some more sources. Thank you all. BVM.
Vanitas art by Toru Kamei has stolen our heat. “Toru KAMEI was born in 1976. He is inspired by Vanitas and try to express transience but beautiful, by drawing common vanitas symbols include skulls, which are a reminder of the certainty of death, flower, which symbolize transience of beauty.”
Here is a lovely way to start your week. The bats may not fit the vanitas theme, but, well, SWS welcomes the deviation.
Sansabelt is actually making a comeback. Perchance the advertisement is not completely real, but Eldridge Cleaver DID in fact market the “front and center” design below. What more can be said. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Oooh, this is fun! Francois Robert created bone letters for a project. The full alphabet is found at this Source . Below I spelled out the name of SWS’s absentee hostess. Giving me letters and fonts is a dangerous time sucker!
McQueen created his own ‘museum of woman-monsters’ in his second couture collection for Givenchy, Eclect Dissect, shown in July 1997. In the period leading up to to the show, his art director Simon Costin combined the late Victorian costumes McQueen was then looking at with with a series of animated skeletons and muscle men from the sixteenth-century anatomical plates of Andreas Vesalius in a series of collages.
Dana is recovering from emergency surgery a couple of nights ago. All I know is that it was unexpected (hence the emergency) and that they managed to clear out some scar tissue that was present from her March 5th, 2013 surgery.
Dana has managed a few brief texts in the past several hours, but was MIA for 24 hours after saying she was in the ER. I’ll leave details up to Dana to speak about in the future, or will let you all know sooner when she is well enough to convey more. Dana is blessed for the support and love of us all, and I thank you for the positive energy to give this well needed boost to Dana. This girl has such will, strength, and… guts!
Daniel Martin Diaz: Soul of Science is a series that speaks to me on such a personal level, as I am always steeped in some swirling combination of art, science, consciousness and philosophical musings…
In the artist’s own words: In the fall, I became immersed in scientific and philosophical theories. In particular, I was obsessed with scientific diagrams, which explain theories and properties through drawings.
My interests also included subjects such as self-aware systems, philosophy, cellular automata, phase transitions, time travel, mystical behaviors at atomic and sub-atomic levels, and the mysteries of consciousness.
Although these rudimentary drawings were without any leanings towards aesthetics, I found them to be beautiful, though that is clearly not their intention. I was inspired to create my own interpretations of the concepts of consciousness and other theories on a scientific, philosophical, and spiritual level through a simplified means such as drawing.
All of the projects I have created begin as drawings, which I feel have a beauty and intimacy that paintings cannot capture. The subtle lines that graphite creates and the quickness with which one can capture an idea makes this medium alluring.
