  • Mathias Kollros

    October 2nd, 2008

If anyone has wondered about the image in my header, it’s cropped from 5 O’clock in Orkzland by Mathias Kollros.

Here’s where I contradict my last post and admit the outstanding and mesmerizing potential of CG art. Some digital works are absolutely breathtaking.

  • The Skeleton Dance

    October 2nd, 2008

In early celebration of Halloween (I could celebrate all month), I give you one of my all time favorite animations, The Skeleton Dance, made by Disney’s Silly Symphony in 1929.

Although modern CGI is a magnificent technical accomplishemt, I feel it lacks the soul found in vintage animation. CGI strives for visual depth, realism and calculated caricature; vintage animation was far more liberal in the creation of characters and use of wonderful anatomical impossibilities.

A version of The Skeleton Dance was colorized and used in the introduction of Disney’s Halloween Treat in 1982. That was my all time favorite Halloween special as a child, and nowadays it’s impossible to find, save for a very overpriced VHS tape on amazon.

Anyone remember that show? Anyone HAVE a copy?

  • Dehydrated Water

    October 2nd, 2008

I absolutely love the fact that someone made this, decades ago.

  • Potion Week: Vintage Poison

    October 2nd, 2008

I already did a post on antique poison bottles, and I figured a poison label post would be a nice addition to Potion Week.

There’s a nice little gallery here. These are going to be great in art/collage projects!

  • William B. Hand

    October 1st, 2008

William B. Hand can paint a whole world in one square inch. Nearly fractal images of life within life, within life…

I love the gift offering in “The Birthday Guest” (above).

He has a true talent for hybrid creatures, which spontaneously evoke maternal instinct and revulsion.

The best source for Hand’s work that I’ve found is his aptly titled blog, GENETIC BLASPHEMY.

  • Doktor A

    October 1st, 2008

The esteemed, or shall I say eSTEAMED Doktor A is without question one of the finest toy modifiers out there. I love his work so much that it’s nearly impossible to choose examples to post.

I do have a special love for this little fellow:

Isn’t this the most stunning custom toy collection?

I highly recommend browsing all sections of Spookypop to see his creations.

(The above is dedicated to my father, who has an unnaturally virulent hatred for the Pillsbury Dough Boy).

  • Potion Week: Garrapata Extracto

    October 1st, 2008

I was going to save this for a special love potion Valentine’s Day post, but I decided to go ahead and put it up.

Garrapata Extract is, as far as I can tell, “tick juice.”

According to the source: This powerful extract attracts your love and makes them cling to you as a tick does.

One must wonder if that effect is actually desirable. Tempting, perhaps, but we’ve all seen those “be careful what you wish for” Twilight Zone episodes about wishes and potions.

Tick juice: $5.95. Tick Juice Antidote: $1,000,000.

  • Cube Lamp

    September 30th, 2008

Ricardo Garza Marco’s Cube Lamp creates the perfect sci-fi atmosphere.

These make me want to slip on a sleek vinyl suit and fight a bleak dystopian future (aren’t we close enough?) with the help of several vinyl-clad rebels.

I love the depth this particular lighting pattern creates.

This goes in the “inspiration” file, should I ever need to hand-create such a vibe.

  • Dan Mumford

    September 30th, 2008

Oh…swirling line work and details galore on Dan Mumford’s site! My eyes get magically lost!

I’m not surprised that he’s been commissioned for album art and clothing design. Very nice work.

  • Potion Week: Blood Inks

    September 30th, 2008

Various blood inks are used in spell writing and for inscriptions on talismans.

Bat’s Blood: For spellwork directed toward discord, tension & havoc.

Dove’s Blood: Used in love spells.

Dragon’s Blood: Used for power and spell strength.

Hm…and I thought my Pilot Retractable Gel Ink Rolling Ball pen was fancy.
