  • Sil Van Der Woerd

    January 3rd, 2009

I’m a big fan of Sil Van Der Woerd’s work; graceful, ethereal, flowing scenes infused with darkness. Symbolism, technology, sensuality, energy…

This entrancing video shows Lolly Jane Blue traveling down through layers of the earth. Technically, it’s safe for work, but an onlooker might not think so from a quick glance.

See a higher quality version here.

If you like beautiful experimental short film (set to music), I also highly recommend Swim and Duet. Both build delightfully toward the end.

  • Andy Zito’s Vintage Snowdomes

    January 3rd, 2009

Andy Zito has the best collection of snowdomes I’ve seen.

I was *very* excited to see this souvenir from the Brussels Atomium I previously posted about:
    atomium_bruxelles

There are some wonderfully rare promotional items, like these Levi’s domes:
    levis

Some have interesting shapes and composition, like this one, simply entitled “SCARCE PENGUIN” (I bet that polar bear was delicious):

I’ve never seen a split layer dome before:

Zito has over 4,500 rare snowdomes, and he has posted highlights on seven gallery pages, starting here.

  • Out of Commission

    January 2nd, 2009

No posts today due to illness. Crazy that I brought in both 2008 and 2009 with a gastrointestinal rebellion (not a drop of alcohol involved, either!).

    Be back ASAP!

  • Christmas Apocalypse

    January 1st, 2009

Although I’d like to usher in the fresh new year on a positive note, I’m going to squeeze in one last holiday post because I really enjoyed this Christmas Apocalypse photoshop contest.

So view some destruction and gas masks aplenty, then go and build yourself a wonderful 2009!

  • Broken Label

    January 1st, 2009

Multimedia designer Nagi Noda teamed up with my favorite artist Mark Ryden this past year to create the clothing line Broken Label.

To be honest, I’m quite jealous of the opportunity to design apparel with Ryden’s art! If I had a license to use his work, loved ones would have to pry me off my sewing machine or I’d never eat, sleep or leave the house.

Noda herself is quite versatile and talented (her Hair Hats were a bit hit on the blogosphere months ago).

See the Broken Label slideshow here.

  • Twilight Zone Museum

    December 31st, 2008

Any fellow geeks out there look forward to the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi every New Years Eve? In honor of one of my favorite shows of all time, I give you The Twilight Zone Museum Online.

I can’t believe I recognized all of the props (the watermarks are very irritating though).

Have a happy, safe and wonderful evening!

  • Kevin Sloan

    December 31st, 2008

Kevin Sloan’s work is appropriately described as “magical realism.” His color saturated still life paintings present a unique combination of man made objects, flora and fauna.

    2007_22

These paintings challenge the observer to bring the story, as familiar objects appear in unfamiliar ways.

Space, time and nature as we know them cease to exist in these brilliant microcosms.

  • Sorapot

    December 30th, 2008

This is the sleekest teapot I’ve ever seen. Classy, sexy, perfectly sci-fi.

The Sorapot looks like it’s cultivating an entire ecosystem with each brew.

    mirror_sorapot2

Sorapot is a unique, modern teapot. Its architectural shape and simple functionality bring tea’s quiet beauty into sharp focus. Made from 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and food-grade silicone, it articulates the ritual of tea making in a thoroughly modern way.

Pricey, yes. But fun to stare at.

  • Virginia Medical College Bulletins

    December 30th, 2008

People are getting bowled over left and right with this year’s stomach flu. Let me inspire you to take good care of yourselves, with these early 20th century Virginia Medical College bulletins (many of which came out after the 1918 Spanish Flu.

    And for the children…

I love the cautionary illustrations in the set.

They even offer this advice on how to keep a patient upright in bed:

(Something tells me there’s gotta be a better way)

Dr. SheWalksSoftly reminds you “not to put anything in your mouth that doesn’t belong there.”

    Influenza, Typhoid and Tuberculosis…oh my!

  • Dave Cooper

    December 29th, 2008

I’ve been a fan of Dave Cooper’s grotesque, shiny, highly unsettling fleshy images for many years.

    dave-cooper1

His uniquely manic style never fails to (literally) stretch and pervert the dimensions and capabilities of human form.

    dave-cooper2

Recently, Cooper did a bouncy, fantastically hideous animated video for Danko Jones. I love it!

He has also published a number of books. Among them:
    Ripple: A Predilection for Tina
Overbite: Drawings and Paintings of Mostly Pillowy Girls
Underbelly: Additional Observations of Beauty/Ugliness of Mostly Pillowy Girls

The new website is under construction, but there are links to other sites…pay it a visit and enjoy the madness!
