  • William Bezek

    August 13th, 2009

One unfathomably lucky woman out there is now the beholder of this Zombie Gypsy fortune teller sculpture, commissioned by William Bezek…and beholder of a new husband, presumably.

Not only is the sculpture amazingly crafted, but the bottom drawer opens to present an engagement ring!

This sculpture appeals to both the zombie lover AND the romantic in me…few objects pull off that harmonious contradiction so exquisitely.

Go take a look at the rest of Bezek’s exceptional work here (especially those who love Halloween, macabre props, and vintage funeral decor).

  • Lego Ads

    August 13th, 2009

Conceptually, I think this ad campaign is brilliant. Remember how a simple block, ball, stick or cloud took shape when your childhood imagination was unleashed upon it?

I hope as toys and entertainment grow more elaborate through the years, children never lose the magical ability to bring colors and objects to life.

(However, the first one is clearly a snake, rising up and poised to strike. And the second is a snail in the grass. I agree with the boat…and the last one is a flying superhero.)

    August 12th, 2009

Dealing with some computer problems and a neck injury. I’ll resume posting tomorrow, so please come back!

  • Dennis Larkins

    August 10th, 2009

Dennis Larkins has such an extensive history that it would be hard to sum up. I’ll just let you peek at a few of my favorites from his collection of vivid, pristine, yet mildly subversive pop-surrealism pieces.

Retro pulp meets sci-fi, with a twist of consumerist commentary…

This is the stuff of Norman Rockwell’s nightmares.

  • X-Ray Umbrella

    August 10th, 2009

I’ve posted about x-ray lamps, and now we have a design prototype for the x-ray umbrella.

    x-ray-umbrella_mrjpb_6648

I suppose I *could* assemble one of these myself, but for some reason the task seems daunting and difficult. Too bad it’s only a prototype and these umbrellas are not being manufactured. Since I’m a measly 5’2″, all the people towering above me would get an interesting eyeful if I pulled this out in the rain.

  • Miles Aldridge

    August 9th, 2009

Every now and then, a fashion photography shoot strikes a chord with me. This one by Miles Aldridge (a wonderful photographer, indeed) appeared in the Italian version of Vogue.

And in case you were wondering, yes…this is exactly what happens in my home library every night.

  • Wood Memo Block

    August 8th, 2009

Sometimes simplicity is a wonderful thing. This memo block is so…for lack of a better descriptive adjective…neat.

The wood design is incredibly well done. I’d love one of these on my desk.

  • Lorraine Mondial Balloon Rally

    August 8th, 2009

As a break from the bones and taxidermy, I give you a few gorgeous pictures from the Mondial Air Balloon rally:

This has got to be as close to any human being can get to feeling like part of a Pixar movie.

  • Kate Clark

    August 7th, 2009

Many people might consider some of my artistic preferences morbid. The scope in which I see beauty is vast, and I often gravitate toward the unusual.

I give Kate Clark immense credit for creating work that actually unnerves me. This is not typical shock value schlock; it is calculating and intense.

    clarkfallow1

Her sculptures toy with the notions of man and animal, life and death. They lurk somewhere between a taxidermist’s masterpiece…and Ed Gein’s secret collection.

    clark1bear

Despite the facial skin, assembled much like a rotting flesh patchwork quilt, the eyes look alive. As I look at them I’m struck with an odd combination of anxiety and pathos.

Thanks, Wurzeltod for this depiction of a question I ask myself almost daily.
