  • Halloween Countdown: Cakes Part 2

    October 18th, 2009

I posted some Halloween wedding cakes, which people seemed to like. So here’s another series of skull-themed cakes (inspired by a post on Haunt Style.

The following come from a great post on Skulls and Bacon, and random image collections I’ve saved:

It’s not always easy to make gray icing appealing, but I think this cake pulls it off:

This one has real charm to it:

Great job on the “fabric” icing.

  • Knitting With Dog Hair

    October 18th, 2009

It’s funny how I’m virtually unshakable in the face of my traditionally “scary” things, but the thought of knitting with dog hair thoroughly unnerves me.

Even more disturbing is the fact that enough people are interested in the subject for a publisher to put out an instructional book.

  • Halloween Countdown: Olaf Breuning

    October 17th, 2009

In 2002, artist/sculptor Olaf Breuning did a garden installation that included dozens of skeletons in various positions of repose and play.

These skeletons seem to be enjoying death more than most people enjoy life. It makes me absolutely joyful to look at them.

  • The Man of Everyone’s Dreams

    October 17th, 2009

    Literally.

In 2000, a psychiatric patient drew a picture of a man who appeared in recurring dreams. The picture was left out on the doctor’s desk, where another patient recognized it from his dreams as well! With a bit of investigation, other patients who saw the same face in their dreams were found. As of now, at least 2,000 people recognize the face as one they’ve dreamed about.

I wonder about the psychological origin of this phenomenon. It’s possible that the image possesses certain archetypal qualities and is vague/varied enough for people to associate with their own dreams.

But I’ve never had a dream about him.

  • Halloween Countdown: The Shadow Farm

    October 16th, 2009

The Shadow Farm makes fantastic eerie creatures, perfect for the Halloween season.

Look at this guy! Isn’t he amazing?

  • Martin Sobey

    October 16th, 2009

Although there are numerous types of work on Martin Sobey’s site, I’m really enamored with what he’s done to city cracks and crevices.

    _MG_1655

It’s so easy to tune out while walking in a city, and resign oneself to simply getting through the harsh gray pavement and elements of decay.

    _MG_1586

I would be thrilled to pass one of Sobey’s projects; bursts of vibrant color and life seeping through the cracks…as if there’s an intensely rich world beneath. These designs are a reversal of all expectations.

I appreciate how the blasts of color encourage people to look beyond the facade of mundane appearances.

  • Halloween Countdown: Boris Dolgov

    October 15th, 2009

Golden Age Comic Book Stories recently ran a feature on little-known pulp illustrator Boris Dolgov. In the 1940’s and 50’s, his work appeared in Weird Tales magazine.

  • Damien Hirst: The Child’s Dream

    October 15th, 2009

Damien Hirst, whom I’ve posted about here, certainly has an impressive body of (often controversial) work.

The Child’s Dream, is currently making its UK debut at the Tate St. Ives gallery as part of The Dark Monarch: Magic and Modernity in British Art exhibition.

I’m terribly sorry, unicorn lovers. I didn’t mean to drown your childhood dreams in formaldehyde. I just find the installation rather captivating.

  • Halloween Countdown: Skeleton Frolic

    October 14th, 2009

The Skeleton Dance is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, so I was shocked when I saw Skeleton Frolic on George Van Orsdel’s blog. How did this escape me for so long?

I absolutely don’t care that it’s a complete rip off of the 1929 cartoon. It’s great.

  • Thanks

    October 13th, 2009

I just want to thank everyone who wrote in or commented on my Boo Berry post, telling me where they’ve spotted it. I did buy some! If you’re looking, most Target stores carry it (and I saw it in Waldbaums as well).

I’m very grateful that people actually reported back to me with their findings! You guys are awesome.
