  • Mars Attacks Cards

    November 30th, 2009

I’m a bit out of the bubblegum card loop (I think I stopped collecting after I amassed thousands of Garbage Pail Kids in the 80’s). Are there any modern cards as awesome as this Mars Attacks series from 1962?

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the Tim Burton flick, featuring these lovely martians:

But I encourage you to check out the original art by comic/pulp artist extraordinaire, Norm Saunders.

(Might I suggest the photo above as an e-card announcement for newly engaged couples?)

    See the whole series here.

And thanks to Monster Brains for reminding me of these.

  • Kate MacDowell

    November 30th, 2009

I’ve had Kate MacDowell bookmarked for a while, and I’ve looked at her gallery at least three or four times this week.

Her sculptures are stunning blends of anatomy and nature. Slightly macabre, always thought provoking…

AND, some can be illuminated for extra effect.

    See the gallery here.

  • The Corpus Adventure

    November 29th, 2009

I have to add the Corpus Interactive Museum to my list of European destinations.

Many young Americans consider Holland a desirable vacation spot for the plethora of legal debauchery, but the Dutch have won my heart with this amazing museum! Shaped like a human body, this building offers a larger than life tour through human anatomy.

The tour begins on an escalator ride through a wound in the calf. Once inside visitors experience the body’s reaction to a wood splinter. After the 3D fertilization movie, guests follow a block of cheese as it makes its way down the digestive tract. Other exhibits feature the heart, lungs, mouth, and of course the brain. A beanbag game even allows visitors to try and take down bacteria before it can cause an infection.

The video is in Dutch, but if you want a quick glimpse…

If anyone has gone, or gets a chance to go, you must tell me about it!

  • Wired: Sleep Photo Contest

    November 29th, 2009

Wired recently had a sleep photo contest, followed by a selection of editor favorites that didn’t make the cut. My favorites are actually among the second set.

You can see the galleries here and here.

  • Ork Posters: The Brain

    November 28th, 2009

Ork Posters, why must you taunt me with your designs? I’ve already posted about the company, and now…

I absolutely love the new brain map, yet still can’t get myself to throw down $18 plus shipping for a small print.

  • Techno Chicken

    November 28th, 2009

Since Americans eat an astonishing amount of turkey the last week in November, do you think the chickens are doing celebratory dances like this?

(Ugh…now I’m lamenting the conditions under which chickens are typically raised in this country…no room for dancing at all).

  • Vintage Thanksgiving Parade Floats

    November 26th, 2009

I could have sworn I posted these last year, but it doesn’t look like it. The one (and only) redeeming quality of parades, in my opinion, is the collection of bizarre, surreal and kitschy props.

Here’s a collection of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Floats from the 1920’s and 1930’s.

  • Wreckalicious

    November 25th, 2009

The Thanksgiving cake disasters are out in full force! I love the creative liberty that supermarket bakeries take with anatomical structure. My morning grocery store trip brought me to this fellow right here:

It looks like a tiny turkey head on a dirt hill…or a bird with some serious glandular dysfunction.

  • Raoul Ubac

    November 25th, 2009

I don’t have much information about Belgian photographer Raoul Ubac, but I was just looking at a few of his pieces that I saved.

    A favorite…

I would like to find more surreal photography created before the advent of digital editing software. Suggestions?

  • “Nice to Meet You” Doorknob

    November 24th, 2009

Oh…oh God…I don’t quite know what to say about this, except for the fact that it looks like a cross between science fiction and my nightmares.

Yep, it’s a doorknob in the shape of a shiny silver hand.

When I look at this thing, I feel like the bad Terminator is coming to get me.
