  • Brian Ulrich

    December 14th, 2009

Many of us are wrapped up in holiday shopping this time of year, so I thought it would be a good time to post some Brian Ulrich photographs.

    Feel the florescent glow…beckoning…

Ulrich has a series of photos depicting the remains of crumbled monuments to consumerism.

It’s interesting to see these one pristine structures at the mercy of abandonment and decay.

Some have not yet rotted, but possess an unnerving sterility when empty.

  • Woody the Woodchuck Christmas Sing Song

    December 13th, 2009

I apologize for bringing this album into your life. It’s an item best left for collectors of seriously horrendous oddities.

Something about Woody the Woodchuck is a little bit…off. This album was not produced correctly, giving the whole thing a slightly warped, off key tone. The “speaking” parts sound like they were cobbled together by a manic robot, the singing is often incomprehensible, things move a little too slowly, and you pretty much finish the album relieved that it’s over.

If you finish. Which is unlikely.

    Anyway…ENJOY!

  • Nathniel Mellor: Robot Heads

    December 13th, 2009

Welcome to the uncanny valley. These singing robot heads (in an installation by Nathaniel Mellor) remind me of a horrific setup in a serial killer’s basement.

Don’t they look like the final scene in a Tales From the Crypt episode?

Here, let the Haunted Mansion singing busts show everyone how it’s done (a cappella):

  • Casey Weldon

    December 12th, 2009

Perhaps I should be posting more holiday stuff, but I’d like to share a few favorite images from Casey Weldon’s portfolio. I’ll be quick…

I think this one is my favorite:

  • Joey’s Corner

    December 12th, 2009

This is some of the greatest gift wrap I’ve come across in a while.

I’m almost tempted to just put this in a poster frame on my wall.

In addition, the company was developed for a great cause:

Joey’s Corner is a non-profit design studio within MOD. We provide pro-bono, strategic creative services to non-profit groups focusing on health care, children’s and social well-being issues.

Michael Osborne founded Joey’s Corner in 2006 to honor the memory of his son, Joseph Michael Osborne. At our first fundraiser, Michael and other artists donated artworks for auction. All of our sales on Felt & Wire Shop, including art, will go directly to Joey’s Corner.

  • Science Themed Christmas Cookies

    December 11th, 2009

How could I not love these science themed holiday cookies?

    Petri dishes!

    Gel electrophoresis!

    Gingerbread scientists!

    Lab mice!

It looks like a lot of work went into these. Very nice.

  • Fairy Tale Christmas Tree

    December 10th, 2009

The luxury London hotel Claridge’s Christmas tree takes the form of fairy tale foliage this year.

Bare, twisted branches, blue leaves, snow leopards, dragonflies (and gorgeous shadows cast on the walls)…

Although I wouldn’t necessarily want this as a Christmas tree, it’s a cool piece in itself. I’d even like a print of the original sketch:

  • Timelapse Sea Worms and Starfish

    December 9th, 2009

I want to thank everyone who forwarded this video to me when it started circulating (I’ve been meaning to post it for a while). You guys certainly know what I like!

  • Image Odyssey: Christ Cake

    December 9th, 2009

It’s that time of year again! That joyous time in an oddity blogger’s life when awful religious parephrenalia starts popping up in relation to the holidays (and time for disclaimers about how this blog does not intend to offend or insult anyone’s faith).

The other day I somehow found myself internally exclaiming the phrase Christ Cakes! when someone cut me off in traffic. Don’t ask me why.

But now I give you…CHRIST CAKES!

I encountered a number of images wishing Jesus a happy birthday, like this 1970’s plastic doormat…er…cake. Someone got a little crazy with the star shaped icing tube attachment.

I think I saw this guy at Whole Foods…

Eat this hazard at your own risk. May cause severe hemorrhaging.

    Literalism.

Are you ready for this? Wait for it…

  • Ryan Abegglen

    December 9th, 2009

I love Ryan Abegglen’s mechanical beasts. The component parts in the diagrams are genius. Who knew these benign creatures could be mechanized murder beneath the surface?
