  • The Arts Map

    April 12th, 2010

I really hope this site takes off and expands to become an all inclusive resource for the art community. The Arts Map (now in beta), is a user generated map of all-things-art.

By location, you can search for galleries, museums, supply shops, schools, public art and all different types of artists themselves. I plan on being a frequent user, especially when traveling!

  • Nicole West

    April 11th, 2010

I just looked through every single picture in Nicole West’s galleries. Her polymer clay sculpted dolls are breathtaking!

They are beautiful, pristine, tragic, vulnerable, sexy, strong…

Some of these would be fantastic inspiration for photo shoots!

See more here. Click on the detail views, too!

  • Predator Portraits

    April 10th, 2010

I’ve had these three images bumming around on my desktop for a while.

I love this picture. The balloon really gives it a special touch, don’t you think?

    Alas, poor Yorick…

This gets my vote for a mass produced child costume:

  • The Periodic Table of Fictional Elements

    April 9th, 2010

What a wonderful poster by Russel Walks: a periodic table of fictional elements.

The elements names are fantastic. Crapcrapium, Wonderflonium…

If only I had a space to hang this!

    Get one here.

  • Halloween, Carnival Style

    April 8th, 2010

I love Pumpkinrot for posting Halloween images all year long with incredible consistency. Check out these images of home Halloween decor I found over there:

Isn’t this an amazing garage setup?

    See the Flickr set here.

  • Alex Young

    April 7th, 2010

Alex Young has a portfolio full of tattoo, graphic, sketch and canvas artwork. I’m particularly drawn to his painted portraits. I’ve never seen this particular style before; the way he uses splatters of color, drips and smudges…such a unique feel, even a glow to some of them.

    See more on his site.

  • You Are Beautiful

    April 6th, 2010

This project warms my heart. We all need to remember these words sometimes, and seeing them unexpectedly can stop us in our tracks (both mental and physical). I’m inspired to start a random acts of kindness project myself to pay it forward!

    From the Project Statement:

You Are Beautiful is a simple, powerful statement which is incorporated into the over absorption of mass media and lifestyles that are wrapped in consumer culture. The intention behind this project is to reach beyond ourselves as individuals to make a difference by creating moments of positive self realization. We’re just attempting to make the world a little better.

Intention is the most important aspect of the You Are Beautiful project in its idea of purity. Nothing is sacred. Everything that has a perceived value becomes commodified. We work extremely hard that this message is received as a simple act of kindness, and nothing more. Advertising elicits a response to buy, where this project elicits a response to do something. The attempt with You Are Beautiful is to create activism instead of consumerism.

You Are Beautiful uses the medium of advertising and commercialization to spread a positive message.
Projects like these make a difference in the world by catching us in the midst of daily life and creating moments of positive self realization.

You can participate in your own little way by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope and receiving free stickers.

Put them in your area…take pictures…see them posted on the project site!

  • Through the Armoire

    April 6th, 2010

Well, this just awakened my childhood dreams of having my own secret hideaway (I *really* pushed for my parents to build secret passageways when we had an addition put on the house).

This unassuming armoire opens up to reveal a secret room. So much potential!

Confession: I still want secret places in my house.

  • Tokyo DisneySea: Journey to the Center of the Earth

    April 5th, 2010

Tokyo DisneySea has opened up an attraction based on Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The scenery is outstanding!

Riders travel through mysterious caverns to the Earth’s core as scientists aboard vehicles designed by Captain Nemo. After traveling through Nemo’s labs inside Mt. Prometheus, guests board “Terravators” to the facility’s base station one half mile below. In the base station is a communications center which is currently giving warnings of increased volcanic activity, but the scientist who mans it is currently away on a tea break. The riders then board steam-powered mine vehicles that travel through pre-drilled tunnels into the heart of the Earth.

I must say, I do love most things “steampunk” despite not being an intricately costumed member of the subculture.

I believe the plaque on the bottom of of this sign indicates a Coca Cola sponsorship (I remember seeing pictures of it in English)…kind of ruins the romance of the statement, so I’m glad it’s in Japanese here. I wouldn’t mind hanging this sign in my library.

See more pictures on Voyages Extraordinaires.

  • Incarnation by Mark Ryden

    April 5th, 2010

This time lapse video is a must see for any Mark Ryden fan. It documents the creation of one latest masterpiece: Incarnation.

I was transfixed and barely batted an eye through the whole video, though I would have loved to see how he got to the final highly refined painting. Perhaps it’s a secret process. It’s Mark Ryden…he’s allowed to perform secret heroics.
