  • Plato’s Republic in Clay

    June 22nd, 2010

I’m going to refrain from commenting too much on this, since the implications of this video are quite profound and I’d like to let everyone form their own impressions. I certainly find it rather powerful.

Here is an adaptation of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in clay:

  • The International Cryptozoology Museum

    June 21st, 2010

Last week, I had the opportunity for an impromptu trip to the city of Portland, Maine. First stop: International Cryptozoology Museum

The museum is tucked in the back of The Green Hand bookstore, which in itself is a fantastic place to visit. There’s a wonderful selection of used books and interesting artifacts. This taxidermy gentleman greets you upon arrival:

I enjoyed keeping my eyes peeled, and coming across things like this bony fellow on the couch.

With renowned cryptozoologist Loren Coleman (who is truly the expert in this field) as our guide, we explored some fun and fascinating artifacts.

Museum items included specimens, bones, taxidermy, molded casts, replicas, pop culture renditions of various cryptids, video footage and movie props.

I was a fan of the Mothman display case.

The museum also covered notorious creature hoaxes and fakes, which was a wonderful addition (and in my opinion, a necessary one when presenting the subject matter).

And on our way out, we saw this plate in the parking lot…

I recommend stopping by the museum if you are ever in the Portland area. Loren has a ton of interesting things to share and has amassed quite a collection.

After the museum, I had my heart set on going to Duckfat for authentic Poutine (Belgian style fries, cheese curds, duck gravy). I was not disappointed.

  • Comment System Working?

    June 21st, 2010

    Quick question…

I’m finally going through my blog email address (which gets the site comments). I try to respond to every comment or contact. For those who have left comments, were you notified about my responses by email? That’s the way it *should* work.

I’d hate to think people don’t see that I’ve acknowledged their contributions. If you take the time to write, I’m going to write back! Someone let me know it’s working properly!

  • Father’s Day

    June 20th, 2010

Today I’d like to like to honor my dad, who is truly one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever known. This man has been a stellar role model of compassion, responsibility and integrity, who continues to inspire me on a daily basis. I owe so much of who I am, and anything I may achieve in the future, to his love and guidance.

It’s a rare person (and a rare parent) who can seamlessly blend rationality and emotion, regulation and freedom, wish and possibility. He selflessly provided so much, yet taught me to take nothing for granted. From him, I learned to hope for great things…yet never balk at working hard to get them. I learned that love is not only words, but the genuine desire to make someone’s world a better place, honoring their needs with equal (if not more) importance than one’s own.

Dad, not a day goes by that I don’t appreciate the hell out of you! May I go forward in this world with the values you have taught me and make you proud…

  • Desktop Goodies 6/19

    June 19th, 2010

Since I was out of town for the past week without time to build up extra posts (and only minimal time for my excessive web browsing), I think I’ll just invite you all back into my head with a small spattering of images currently on my desktop.

Skeletons and skulls seemed to pop up more than usual in my findings this week (I’m saving most of them for future posts).

Don’t pretend you’re not sounding this one out and making the noise in your head…

You realize, someone had to arrange the wieners to look this way:

  • Gloom

    June 18th, 2010

I know nothing about this artist, aside from a Russian Livejournal page.

However, this is a truly fine collection of dark, quasi-surreal digital art. Finely detailed work, thoroughly disconcerting at times, endearing at others.

Creatures, monsters, animals…in post-apocalyptic looking scenes…somewhere between fairy tales and nightmares…

It’s definitely worth going through the rest here.

  • Stuff No One Told Me

    June 17th, 2010

I’m definitely adding Stuff No One Told Me to my blog roster. Each post is a tiny slice of adorably illustrated wisdom.

What first caught my eye was the following statement, which I have always lived by:

So to anyone actually reading this, thanks for liking my stuff!

  • Marc Hosford

    June 15th, 2010

I found Mark Hosford’s work on the Neatorama Art Blog the other day and had to share.

As a psychology AND art geek, I’m always pleased to see Rorschach ink blot inspired work. This series uses models of the actual ink blots as a backdrop. Hosford drew freely, directly over the shapes.

In another series, Hosford draws interpretations of personal or famous ghost stories. They are so detailed and imaginative, I think they’d inspire complete stories in the minds of people who don’t know the original references.

  • Crobots

    June 14th, 2010

I’ve never attempted to make amigurumi creations (one day, perhaps…but there are so many craft methods I’m itching to try). But for those who are already skilled in the art of crocheted plush toys, Crobots seems like a wonderful resource.

I’m sure every robot in this book is adorable! I wish I had the time to learn how to make them.

Does anyone do amigurumi creatures? If so, please show me photos!

  • Shadow Shower Curtain

    June 13th, 2010

Of all the decorative shower curtains I’ve seen around the Halloween season (which is now only four months away), this is my favorite:

How freaky would it be to unassumingly flip on the bathroom light in someone’s house and see this?
