  • Fence Face Illusion

This illusion is absolutely amazing. I wonder how many people were incredibly spooked by it.

  • 100 Artists See Satan

    June 29th, 2010

The CSUF Grand Central Art Center is having a fundraiser with a satanic theme. 100 artists have contributed their renditions of all-things-satan. Here are a few of my favorites:

Not an “everyday” purse, but think the noose handle is pretty clever:

I refuse to believe that Satan is a sugar glider (though it would be a brilliant disguise).

Info and full artist list (with photo links) here.

  • Sergey Bobkov

    June 28th, 2010

Russian artist Sergey Bobkov crafts animal sculptures out of wood chips and shavings. Each one is carefully based on the anatomy of the actual creature and takes months to create.

Bobkov devised his own methods of creating these sculptures. “It’s not too interesting to do what others can,” he says. “To create something out of nothing in a completely new way is far more inspiring.”

  • Live Maine Lobster

    June 28th, 2010

I forget where I first found this postcard. I was going to post it while I was away in Maine recently, but forgot to take it from my external hard drive.

I’m sure you’ve heard that the lobster scene in Maine is top notch. A vintage postcard maker seems to have captured its essence:

Maine is not actually filled with giant b-movie lobsters crawling (and hovering over) the beaches.

At least not where I stayed.

Is there a place on the coast where the lobsters eat you?

  • Tie Tea Mugs

    June 27th, 2010

Just another little addition to the “Why didn’t I think of that?” file: Tie Tea Mugs.

Granted, tea bag strings slipping around is not among life’s most severe problems…but why not just loop it and forget it?

  • Bruce Campbell’s Soup

    June 27th, 2010

In Honor of Bruce Campbell’s recent birthday, Sci-Fi Wire posted these wonderful (Bruce) Campbell’s Soup labels, free to print and use! What a delight for horror fans:

I’m definitely busting these out for my next Halloween party!

Source (and full sized downloads) here.

  • GreenEyedMonster88

    June 26th, 2010

I came across a drawing by GreenEyedMonster88 in an image search for “mothman.” I was drawn to explore the rest of her gallery based on this piece:

I found some wonderful monsters waiting for me, heavily influenced by mythology, cosmology and demonology.

    See more here.

  • Laser Cut Victorian Doll House

    June 25th, 2010

After my brief foray into the artistic underworld of sickening pretension, I’m back to featuring something I’m absolutely crazy about: the Laser Cut Victorian Doll House.

I was recently musing about hypothetical components of my “dream house.” Well, I’m pretty sure it’s all here.

I think I want to pin a picture of this on the wall for inspiration. Luckily, if I can never live in a house like this…I’m pretty sure I’d be thrilled just to have the model.

It would take a staggering amount of work to put this together, properly painted and all. But it would be SO worth the finished product!

(Note: a generous benefactor…we’ll call him…Sir Blue Flavor…has tentatively agreed to fulfill my dreams of owning this, under the condition that I address my remaining health troubles and get nice and strong…he’s got a DEAL!)

    Ah, a girl can dream…

  • What I Dislike About the Art World: Example 1

    June 24th, 2010

I prattle on about art that I love in this blog. Sometimes I clamor to describe what I consider the repulsive underbelly of the art world.

Luckily, Craftastrophe has done a fine job of choosing a representative example for me.

    First, there is the “art:”

Aside from mourning the fate of that poor crushed rabbit, I can’t say I’m all that bothered by the lack of what most might call “talent” exhibited here. Not everyone is a virtuoso, and that shouldn’t matter. I encourage creativity regardless of skill level.

But it irks me when I see the piece above accompanied by THIS personal bio:

I strive to be one of the Greatest Mysteries of the century. I adore things from years past and try my best to ignore the present culture. My home is a colourful blend of rock memorabilia, old books, antiques, and everything pure nostalgia. My wardrobe gives me away as a Dandy. I proudly clothe myself in vintage thrifted treasures. I’m a Mod waif with cropped golden blonde hair- all legs and big green eyes. Since birth I’ve clearly been a moody and eccentric artist. My loves of art and Music are intertwined and it’s impossible to choose one over the other. Until I met my husband I spent all my time listening to records and dressing up. Now we do that together. He’s a sexy rockstar and theatrical to the core. Together we’re just a pair of eccentric androgynous peacocks- and we like it that way.

    Here…go ahead…I’ll wait…

    Thanks, Craftastrophe!

  • How Scientists See the World

    June 23rd, 2010

    I love this little cartoon.

I’m very tempted to draw a similar cartoon with my own equations and see. My mind is always a whirlwind of art, science and senses…intermingling in what might appear to be very odd ways to an observer. To me, it’s all integrated. I tend to experience my surrounding on BOTH intellectual and sensual levels simultaneously. How would that translate into a cartoon…
