  • Desktop Goodies 7/16

    July 16th, 2010

Another look at what’s passing through the revolving door of oddities that is my computer desktop…

There’s nothing funny about a rusty clown head on a gloomy day…

An arguably less common form of sexual harassment…

By William Bezek…this somehow reminds me of the upshot of being an Extra Woman:

How would YOU depict a “surge of evil menace?”

I forgot to include this in my Ric Stultz post, but I love this mechanical seahorse:

    Haunted…

Caption contest for this next one?

  • Ric Stultz

    July 15th, 2010

I actually hadn’t planned to make a blog post right now, but I got wrapped up in the sheer fun of Ric Stultz’s work.

    Many birds and sweets…

  • Time For a New Job

    July 14th, 2010

This German ad campaign for a job search agency features creative interpretations of what goes on behind the scenes in some of the devices we take for granted.

Time to think about your own tough, thankless job. Brilliant!

Actually, I know a few people who probably wouldn’t mind this job:

  • Typewriter Music

    July 13th, 2010

What is it about the old fashioned clicking of typewriter keys that makes me so weak in the knees? Check out this antiquated device as it accompanies a short orchestral performance by Leroy Anderson:

  • Practical and Artistic Uses for Toast

    July 13th, 2010

I came across this informative little tip recently (my broiler is uneven…I will be trying this when I can get enough toast eaters in my house at once):

This “test” reminded me of David Reimondo’s toast art, made of bread cast in resin.

  • Violetpie

    July 12th, 2010

Oh wow…handmade felt and mohair toys that look like they jumped directly out of a Mark Ryden painting! Violetpie’s work is extraordinary.

Look at how expressive these little creatures are…

Her flickr site is a treat in itself, since it contains hundreds of craft projects, along with some creepy doll photography and many interesting artifacts.

You can also check her blog and etsy shop.

  • Beth Moon

    July 11th, 2010

I been looking at some tree photography lately (I was inspired after starting a Halloween prop last week…yes…in July). Beth Moon has some spectacular tree images.

I couldn’t put my finger on what was so unique, aside from the striking beauty, until I read about the process:

All photographs are platinum/palladium prints. These metals are hand coated on 100% rag cotton water color paper. Since platinum, like gold, is so stable and permanent, the platinum print is the most archival of any image on paper. A platinum print can last for centuries.

As we know, I have infinite respect for artists who use tangible materials in the digital age. So much soul…

  • Humans Are Among Us!

    July 10th, 2010

What a brilliant old ad campaign for the Sci-Fi Channel (before it became SyFy):

Yes indeed, monsters and aliens…humans can be frightening and cringe-worthy, can’t they?

  • Veronichka

    July 9th, 2010

I would say these are the images of my dreams, but perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I wish my dreams looked like Veronichka’s work.

There is most certainly a recurring theme that appeals to me: small objects or characters in expansive spaces, often accompanied by images associated with floating and flight.

I love her use of empty space…

  • Go Medieval on Your Morning Coffee

    July 8th, 2010

I think the design could actually benefit from a few extra spikes. If you’re going to make a coffee machine that resembles a medieval mace, you gotta go ALL out. Am I right?

Strongly consider this design for your torture chamber or dungeon, where a standard “MR. Coffee” pot just wouldn’t do.

The best part of waking up is agony in your cup!
