  • Tatsuya Morino

    December 1st, 2010

Somehow, I missed this on Pink Tentacle, but luckily Monster Brains also posted it.

Tatsuya Morino’s horror and sci-fi illustrations are top notch.

    Detailed…wild…frantic…intense…

You’ll find interpretations of HG Wells, Mary Shelley and other well known classics in his collection.

    See more here.

  • Can You Draw the Internet?

    November 30th, 2010

I like the whole custom craze in the “designer” vinyl toy world because I find it fascinating to see how different brains artistically interpret a single concept.

Can You Draw the Internet is one such collaborative project.

    The idea:

Children today are growing up in a world of technology and communications. They have never experienced a world without the internet, with every part of their day consumed by mobile phones, websites, computer games, apps, Xbox, you name it. We took this thought and ‘thought’ it would be interesting to find out what their perception of the internet actually is, by way of scribble, drawing, or piece of art. Then, to make things even more interesting we thought it would be great to get the creative industry involved. Why? To find out who’s the more creative. The industry with all of it’s wisdom, or the kids with their vivid imaginations.

Half of the contestants are adult artists…

    And half are children…

It’s quite interesting to see the range of designs in both categories. Have a look for yourself.

  • Chadwick & Spector

    November 29th, 2010

Body painting: it’s not just for carnivals anymore. In their Museum Anatomy exhibit, Chadwick & Spector recreate fine art gallery selections on the human body.

This ambitious project must have been outrageously time consuming for both the artists and models.

There are many other breathtaking works on the artist site. Go have a look!

  • Lori Nix

    November 28th, 2010

I featured an amazing Lori Nix photograph in my last Desktop Goodies post, but she really deserves her own entry here.

Her images are rich and lush, filled with life and decay…often post-apocalyptic.

    From the artist bio:

I am often asked questions about the inspiration for my work as well as my working process. As a ‘non-traditional’ photographer (I construct my subject matter rather than go find it) people find it hard to grasp what exactly it is that I do. And the fact that it is all done in front of the camera, with no digital manipulation, adds its own set of challenges. Building materials, lighting, issues of scale and space all become significant when you are recreating the world on a table top.

I cannot believe that most of her photos are hand crafted scenes and dioramas.

You can read a lengthy interview about her materials and process here, and see more incredible work on her website.

  • Derek Nobbs

    November 27th, 2010

A recent post on Who Killed Bambi introduced me to Derek Nobbs.

His work is a slice of dark Americana (complete with aged paper). Vintage design, calligraphy, skeletons, flora and fauna…lots of wonderful elements.

See more here, and check out his blog.

  • Croshame

    November 26th, 2010

I’ve seen Croshame’s work on no less than five of my favorite craft blogs in the past week…but I’m sharing this work anyway. Whether cute, sinister or both, I admire the ability to crochet such interesting creatures.

    Check out the Exorcist Playset!

    Yum…

    Sid and Nancy…

If Satan had toddlers, this Black Metal Guy would be the perfect plaything…

    See a few more here.

  • Happy Thanksgiving

    November 25th, 2010

Here are a few delicacies, courtesy of Cake Wrecks to start (or finish) your day off right. Enjoy these turkey cakes (and I use the word “turkey in the loosest possible sense).

This one is either a football in disguise or some sort of Frankenturkey whose stitches are not healing very well:

Is it really hip to be square?

    Nope. Not even close:

Holidays can be stressful. This fellow either drank too much schnapps and plummeted off the table, or he has seen terrible things he cannot un-see. Some things are best left unsolved.

And if you prefer to dine on Admiral Ackbar:

    Don’t believe me? Viola!

May all the US reader out there have a wonderful holiday with much to be thankful for!

  • Turkey Hat

    November 25th, 2010

I would absolutely show up at a holiday dinner wearing this Turkey Hat.

I would just say I’m doing my best impression of stuffing. Little blond girl flavor.

  • Desktop Goodies 11/24

    November 24th, 2010

Let’s see what’s clogging up my desktop thanks to my itchy trigger (a.k.a “right click”) finger this week…

I’m guessing I got these from Golden Age Comic Book Stories. Here’s a nice little head on a platter to whet your holiday appetite.

I’ve made a bunch of unique snow globes as gifts over the years, so even though Urban Outfitters chose a trendy object (other options could have included cupcakes, bacon and ninjas), I applaud unusual snow globes.

Halloween is over, but there is no excuse NOT to show this costume:

Atypik has some great geek treats…like these Rorschach coasters:

Could this really make me…a CHAMPION?

    AMAZING photo by Lori Nix:

A gift fit for a president:

When I glanced at this photo, I really wished the queen were making a bold fashion statement. Turns out she was watching a 3D science presentation (which is arguably still pretty neat):

This doll by Sheri DeBow reminds me of my slightly goth days in college (I would have had solid black under that lace though…modest thing that I am).

Oh, and while we’re on the subject, how about a Robert Smith embroidered pillow?

I love the color and composition of this photo:

I saw this a few weeks ago at a baby’s first birthday party (not in a house, in a church rec room). At first I was calling him “Composite Jesus” because he is actually composed out of little pieces of religious scenery. But he could also be known as “Kenny Loggins Jesus.”

Now Kenny Loggins Jesus and I bid you adieu…

  • The Black Broom

    November 21st, 2010

I’ve waded through a sea of advertising requests from sites that clearly do not belong on this blog (prefab vinyl siding, drug companies…you name it). So it’s a real treat to have support from sites that make one of a kind, dark delights I would personally add to my own collection of oddities.

I present: The Black Broom, purveyors of fine occult and dark unique wares.

Unique, indeed! Everything on the site is handcrafted and not available elsewhere. You’ll find things for the home, like this Devil Spoon:

Or if you prefer the devil on your wall…

I was really impressed with this necklace version of “The Kiss.” Truly haunting, and superbly crafted.

They carry one of my favorite alchemical symbols, the ouroboros (even the packaging is beautiful).

The roster of infamous man and myth that shows up in their products is worth perusing simply for the history! Gods and villains from a variety of cultures are cast in stone and metal, with a thorough description to accompany each piece (really, you’ll find everything from ancient legends to iconic lowbrow pop art).

You can even have them on buttons for your clothing!

Some objects are classy and refined, with a sinister twist.

…and their skull replicas appear disarmingly real.

Now, even though I’m a cheap bastard, I must say that their prices are quite good for handcrafted objects, meticulously constructed from quality material. A number of these items are going on my wish and gift lists.
