  • Evergrunge

    February 26th, 2011

I don’t know how they do it, but Who Killed Bambi frequently manages to post artists I love and have never seen. The latest to make an impression: EVERGRUNGE.

Explosive, chaotic, apocalyptic collages, packed with color and detail…

There’s a lot to digest in these images, so I suggest the full size versions on deviantart.

More on the artist site, deviantart and Behance.

  • Spooky Shades

    February 25th, 2011

Spooky Shades are the perfect decoration for lovers of dark Victorian style, anatomical art, horror, comics and rock n’ roll (all of which would be welcome in my home).

I’ll take three for my bedroom and three for my library!

  • Tonya Hurley: Ghost Girl

    February 24th, 2011

Sometimes the kindness of strangers absolutely blows me away. I was given a lovely set of Ghost Girl books (plus an awesome pillow case I plan to photograph) by Tonya Hurley.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, these books are beautifully constructed. Absolutely gorgeous.

I’m away from the books at the moment…which is a shame, because images taken from the internet do not show that the silhouette of Ghost Girl is actually cut out and placed behind a clear frame like a portrait.

Even the inside of the books contain wonderful detail. These are every bit as much works of art as they are novels.

I’ll be immersed in thousands of pages of Behavioral, Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience for the next number of months, so my fiction reading will be very limited. But if anyone has already read the Ghost Girl trilogy, please comment and tell me about it.

Check out the trailer for Lovesick. I wish this were a full length feature!

More fun stuff to browse on the website.

Ms. Hurley, thank you for making my day with this package and giving me some fun things to look forward to!

  • Physica Sacra

    February 24th, 2011

Morbid Anatomy recently led me to an incredible series of work by Swiss scholar Johann Jakob Scheuchzer.

Scheuchzer, a doctor and natural scientist from Zurich, planned the Physica sacra as an explanation of and a commentary on the Bible on natural-scientific grounds. He himself oversaw the illustrations which were largely based on his own natural history cabinet or on other famous European cabinets of rare specimens.

    So much to take in…

You can see the whole amazing set on Flickr here.

  • False Alarm of the Day: iPong

    February 23rd, 2011

A momentary glance from the corner of my eye had me believing this was a device designed specifically to shoot cheese balls into one’s mouth.

Sadly, it’s just for ping pong.

    What a disappointment.

  • Send Emails in Your Own Handwriting

    February 23rd, 2011

This development from Pilot is a nice way to (slightly) appease my anachronistic love of written letters and printed pages.

Now you can send emails in your own handwriting.

First you register on the site and print out a blank template.

Fill in the spaces and upload the template via scanner, camera or webcam and save…

And presto! A digitized version of your own handwriting that you can even enhance if you choose.

If anyone tries this, I’d love to see examples (I do plan to try it myself as well).

  • Merit Badges: For Excellence in Life

    February 22nd, 2011

Check out this series of Life Merit Badges.

You could spring for the whole Over-Achiever 12 Pack (quite pricey), or focus on the specific ways you have mastered the art of living. A few I would like…

The Big Dipper: for dreaming big

The Heart: for giving a shit (I do…I really do)

The Inkblot: for facing your inner demons (Fun? No. Worth it? Yes.)

The Sprout: for growing from adversity (My un-chosen area of expertise in life)

The Voodoo Doll: for using one’s powers for good (I try…I try…)

Dopamine Molecule: for believing in love (again…I try…)

  • Surreal Architecture Illusion

    February 22nd, 2011

Perhaps it’s all the more intriguing because of how little information is available…but if anyone knows more about the origin of these magnificent buildings than the source, please share!

  • Jacob Petersson: Curiomira

    February 21st, 2011

The Art of Darkness just brought my attention to Jacob Petersson’s Curiomira.

Petersson is a Swedish artist and prop maker. His blog contains some truly amazing dark eye candy.

His sculptures hoover somewhere between something you’d find in a Victorian wunderkammer, vintage sideshow, medical museum or classic spookshow.

  • The Human Body: Student Gallery

    February 20th, 2011

Awww…the minds of the future flex their artistic muscles with some anatomy drawings!

I think this is a fantastic project. Personally, I learn better when I write, draw or make the experience tactile in some way (I predict handmade brain flashcards as I go through neuroscience studies this semester!).

I love seeing how young minds interpret and express scientific subject matter…
