  • Mother’s Day

    May 8th, 2011

Today I bring you a shiny placemat I made for her in Kindergarten. Yep, a SheWalksSoftly original.

I don’t think I could write a better tribute than I did last year. Every word of it still applies…every day. I miss her very much.

If you like this blog, you partially have her to thank. She surrounded me with creativity and imagination from my youngest days, supported my every project and crazy scheme. She was a gifted artist and fiercely loving human being. From her I learned to bestow kindness upon strangers and shower my loved ones with (quirky) displays of affection. I learned to create without limits, and fearlessly forge paths where none existed.

Mom, thanks for thinking outside of the box with me, and for fitting a lifetime of love into a life cut short. I carry the magic of your incredible spirit in my heart always.

    HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

  • Street Art Roundup

    May 7th, 2011

A few of my favorite recent street art images…

    Look at this! Amazing!

    Sometimes simplicity is awesome.

  • Desktop Goodies 5/6

    May 6th, 2011

An elegant lady knows that one must always match her toilet paper with her evening gown.

When I attempted to make a shoofly pie and had an accident that propelled hot molasses over every surface of my kitchen (ceilings included), I wish I could say it was for a justifiable reason…like a donkey sneaking up on me.

One must pause and think “Just because we CAN, does it mean we SHOULD?”

Who’s proud to be an American?

Pay attention zoology students. This is how animals really work.

This next piece may require some time to sink in. I invite you to write your own narrative.

I agree that music can be a fantastic and enriching part of life from a very young age, but I’m not sure it should be documented in exactly this fashion.

I know one of my favorite kitties would love to levitate. He’s into ceilings. I’m not thinking of making the little hat for him or anything…nope…not at all…

I’m watching Doctor Who these days. Had to grab this screen shot with my phone’s camera.

DANGERMOUSE CUPCAKES! This was my favorite cartoon as a kid. By Naomi.

Sans tentacles and ruffled collar, I would love this outfit (part of me will always remain a soft core Goth).

(Thanks to Kitschy Living for a couple of these images)

  • Lubu

    May 5th, 2011

You know an artist/crafter has caught your attention when you actually go through 60 pages of flickr to see examples of work. The unbearable cuteness of Lubu’s creations just sucked me in.

I was reminded that I had Lubu bookmarked after using a bot creation in my Vintage Strongman post.

    Look at this brain bot!

    And X-ray bot…

    Geeky bots (with cats…bonus!)…

There are bots for absolutely everyone, whether you love pop culture, geek culture, or anything in between.

Get lost in the cuteness on Flickr or Etsy.

  • Just One More Row…

    May 4th, 2011

Ah, we bony creatures must stay warm. Here’s one way to go about it.

See a few more pictures and read some info here.

  • I…Am…IRONWOMAN!

    May 2nd, 2011

I have often been asked “Can’t you do anything like a normal person?”

The answer is no. No, I cannot.

At the moment, my anemia makes ALL the zombies jealous. It can’t be fixed with pills, liquids, leafy greens or hunks of meat.

In keeping with my inability to do anything like a normal person, I’ve made this nifty countdown chart for my series of weekly IV treatments (click for larger view).

    One down…

Some people might think I’m too silly or morbid…I say I’m a girl who knows how to get her kicks out of anything! It’s a valuable skill, believe me.

  • Patrick Hruby

    May 1st, 2011

The first thing that struck me about Patrick Hruby’s work is that it deviates from the kind of art that usually catches my eye, but I’m drawn to it nonetheless.

I think these pieces spark a bit of nostalgia because I am reminded of Disney’s It’s a Small World (which helped engender my love of freakish toys and dolls at a very young age…that ride is like a nightmare after too much candy, in the most wonderful way).

    It’s a Small World:

    Back to Hruby…

I really like the way Hruby uses simple sections of color. And how he brightly covers some darker subjects.

I feel like a kid again.

  • Cart Before the Horse

    April 30th, 2011

I’ve just been ogling some creations on Cart Before the Horse. Look at these adorable party skeletons!

They come in three sizes and three color schemes…

Everything on the site is hand crafted and hand painted. This robot is another favorite of mine…

Projects range from sweet folk art characters, to surreal flora and fauna, to slightly dark personalities.

  • Stuart Briers

    April 29th, 2011

Graphic designer Stuart Briers caught my eye with his biomedical, anatomical and scientific images.

I like this bright, clear fusion of art and science; almost a throwback to old fashioned infographics, but distinctly modern and smooth.

I should tack this one up on my wall as study inspiration…

  • Homage to the Rabbits

    April 27th, 2011

This video comes from my friend Tom (too bad it’s on the tail end…pun intended…of Easter). Didn’t get to post it in time…

    Thanks for the nightmares, Tom!
