  • Bronze Raven Doorbell

    August 10th, 2011

I have no idea why I did a search for “raven doorbell” and bookmarked this last year (probably something dream-prompted), but this is what I found. There’s something…not right…about this poor fellow.

He seems distressed, and unwelcoming toward human fingers in his mouth.

What sentiment do you think he’s expressing? Quotes?

  • Cheval Noir

    August 9th, 2011

Cheval Noir is the website or Japanese artist Aya Kato.

Her work is so lushly detailed, with brilliant tapestries of color…

I swear, some of these images appear to actually give off light. Beautiful.

    See more in her galleries.

  • Fobots

    August 8th, 2011

I would like to adopt a veritable army of these Fobots (found object robots). They’ve got a delightful retro-kitsch twist.

See more in the Fobot galleries.

  • Katsuo Aoki

    August 7th, 2011

These porcelain skull sculptures by Katsuo Aoki are beautiful…intricately detailed and liquid-like…

The installations are also quite interesting and well crafted.

    See more here.

  • Mainzer Cats

    August 6th, 2011

I think many of us have at some point seen an image sampled from a vintage Alfred Mainzer Cat postcard (Mainzer was the publisher; the images were painted by Swiss artist Eugen Hurtung).

Recognize the style? Oddly anthropomorphic felines placed in distinctly human situations…

    Often, chaos arises.

Ah…they’re incorrigible (I am currently watching a cat in her sixth consecutive hour of napping and increasingly doubting feline willingness to pick up a drill and engage in construction work).

I may send this as my next “get well” greeting:

Some are appropriate for party invitations:

Just wanted to pay tribute to this seminal slice of kitsch history. I captured my images from Card Cow but there is a more official collector site here. Does anyone have originals?

  • Craig Hunter Parker: Obstaculum

    August 5th, 2011

Obstaculum is a beautiful photo series by Craig Hunter Parker which he describes as “collective arcane glimpses of our real and surreal boundaries.”

The glowing, hazy, cinematic surreality is simply gorgeous…

Are you lost in it yet?

  • Termespheres

    August 4th, 2011

Though he sites MC Escher and Buckminster Fuller as influences, Dick Termes has developed an intriguing art form of his own: the Termesphere.

“Imagine that you are standing inside a transparent ball suspended fifty feet above the Grand Canyon floor. You are higher than some canyon walls and lower than others. You have paints and a brush, and you begin to paint what you see on the inside surface of the ball. You paint the north face, then the east, south, and west. Finally, you paint everything visible above and below you. You move your globe to safe ground and step out to observe your paintings.Walking around the sphere, you see that you have captured the entire three dimensional landscape. In fact, you’ve discovered the structure of your visual experience.”

Termes transforms architecture, landscapes and fantastical worlds in his imagination to spherical representations. They hang in space and roate on a central axis, powered by motors.

I am duly impressed with his combination of creativity, mathematics, theory and execution.

If you really want your mind blown, read his illustrated description of the 6 Point Perspective.

Apparently pop culture bloggers have invented and embraced the word “AMAZEBALLS” for use in juicy celebrity gossip. I feel that word is more fitting in reference to Termespheres.

  • Gone Neurosciencin’!

    August 3rd, 2011

In the foreseeable future I will be deeply submerged in the world of neuroscience studies. However, I didn’t want to stop posting here so I’ve stockpiled a number of drafts to go up each day.

Please excuse the relative lack of commentary that accompanies the artsy oddities of the following weeks. I still have countless things to share on a daily basis but my workload will prohibit writing too much about any of them, at least for a little while. So enjoy the pictures, and maybe we can get a little dialogue going in the comments (I’ll surely respond).

By the way, you know you have an awesome best friend when he not only refers to a previous post but honors you in TWO drawings when you’ve got a challenge on the horizon.

Look at me leaping tall buildings in a single bound! It is my not-quite-yet professional medical opinion that doodles heal all.

    Thanks, Ronnie!

  • Leona Anderson: Music to Suffer By

    August 2nd, 2011

This album is awful. Intentionally. But the title is bloody brilliant.

Leona Anderson made bad singing a legitimate, if entirely unnecessary, form of entertainment. She reveled in the limitations and deficiencies in her singing voice and her publicity proudly proclaimed her as “the World’s Most Horrible Singer.”

Well, now a lot of hipsters do that…but it was actually interesting in 1957.

    Here’s a sample track:

  • Alexander McQueen: Alien Shoes

    August 1st, 2011

I rarely have the slightest interest in or awareness of what’s going on in the world of high fashion, but I make brief and rare exceptions to enjoy the anatomical and sci-fi inspired designs of Alexander McQueen.

For example, these Giger-esque Alien shoes:

I know, these are SO last season. They come in a variety of colors (I don’t understand why blue and white would be among them). In my opinion nothing beats the classic “metal” pictured above, save for maybe a glossy black version, more true to Alien form.

I would also like to accessorize with the previously mentioned Alien Pez Dispenser.
