  • Women of Science Laser Cut Ornaments

    December 9th, 2011

Over on Etsy, EAVESMADE has crafted a series of laser cut ornaments based on the famous women of science.

    A closeup of one:

Now, I’ve made my fair share of very geeky ornaments (including my atomic particle tree topper), but nothing like these!

    The whole set includes:
    Rosalind Franklin (genetics)
    Marie Curie (radiation/chemistry)
    Jane Goodall (primatology)
    Rachel Carson (ecology)
Elizabeth Blackwell (first U.S. female physician)
    Mary Leakey (archaeology/anthropology)
Martha Euphemia Lofton Haynes (the first African American woman Ph. D. in Mathematics)
Mary Edwards Walker (U.S. feminist, surgeon, POW, only woman to win the Medal of Honor)
    Grace Hopper (computer science)
    Ada Lovelace (programming, mathematics)

Visit EAVESMADE for some science-y goodness.

  • A is For Atom

    December 8th, 2011

This informational film came up in most of my searches regarding vintage representations of atomic energy (yes, I search for things like that in my spare time).

Do not miss this one if you enjoy that mid-20th century PSA feeling. Great retro animation. I’m sure many people today do not know as much about nuclear energy as this video covers.

  • Weapons of Mass Creation

    December 7th, 2011

What a nifty little poster concept: Weapons of Mass Creation. Available in music, cooking and art supplies.

  • Gingerbread Phantom Manor

    December 6th, 2011

Now this is what I’d like to make as a holiday gingerbread house!

Haunted Dimensions has a cookie version of Phantom Manor (Disneyland Paris’s version of the Haunted Mansion, which I did get to visit many years ago as a haunt-loving 13 year old).

    Here is the Manor:

    Et, viola!

Should you wish to attempt the undoubtedly time consuming but rewarding venture of making this house, Haunted Dimensions was kind enough to share the process and design templates here.

If you are a Haunted Mansion fan, it’s definitely worth browsing the 3D models, paper models and graphics on the rest of Haunted Dimensions.

  • Owen Gent

    December 5th, 2011

I came across the following painting on Street Anatomy, which prompted me to look into more of Owen Gent’s work.

Good work, little buddy! Keep at it!

Here’s another one I like with a dash of anatomical flair:

These next two come from a postcard series “featuring a selection of the most distinguished british woodland animals, uniting for everything quintessentially wholesome and good that make this green and pleasant land so fine!”

    Pheasants unite for proper grammar!

    Badgers unite for storytelling!

Looking at this one makes me want to imitate the noises I imagine this guy is making…

I don’t know where this bush baby is paddling to…but it looks like there’s a story here. What has been seen cannot be unseen…

Maybe he’s just going to meet a lemur for tea…

See more on Owen Gent’s Tumblr and Flickr.

  • Richard A. Kirk

    December 4th, 2011

Richard A. Kirk is one of those artists with such a rich, interesting body of work that it’s exceedingly difficult to choose a few images to feature here.

Such lush detail in these delightful, morphing chimeras…

See more on the artist website.

  • Crafty Lady Abby: Skull Snowflake

    December 3rd, 2011

I’m definitely going to make one (or many) of these skull snowflakes for decoration this year…

See the tutorial here if you want to try to out!

  • Monika Grzymala: Black Tape Installation

    December 2nd, 2011

Monika Grzymala created this explosive installation for the Sumarria Lunn gallery in London using only black tape.

So, clever folks out there…what does this conjure up for you? Black and white bloodbath? Monster vomit? A giant pen that exploded?

  • Nikolai Lutohin: Galaksija

    December 1st, 2011

50 Watts has done it again, with an amazing vintage sci-fi post that features illustrations from Galaksija Magazine.

These images are by Yugoslavian artist Nikolai Lutohin.

I would love to put some of these on T-shirts or jewelry.

    See more here.

  • William Bezek: Ghost of Jacob Marley Door Knocker

    November 30th, 2011

William Bezek is one of the artists I keep coming back to on this blog because he repeatedly produces unique new work that I happen to find delightful. Just in time for the holiday season, we have the Ghost of Jacob Marley Door Knocker!

What an amazing idea for a door decoration!

You may remember this scene from A Christmas Carol. On a related note, here is the very first surviving film adaptation of the story, made in 1901 by the English movie pioneer R.W. Paul:

Bezek is also responsible for the greatest custom wedding proposal sculpture I’ve seen, and some lovely pumpkins I’ve previously posted.
