  • Nick Fedaeff

    April 14th, 2016

Today I give you the psychedelic (and geometric) portraiture of Nick Fedaeff.

    raphaello-2

    From the artist bio:
The slightly disorienting, the hallucinatory quality of a dream, the element of surprise, the absurdity of life are cleverly layered into Nick’s work referencing Surrealism and the Old Masters of the Renaissance.

    Nick Fedaeff. Flower power

Thematically Nick interprets the relationships and interconnections between men and women and life and death adding humour as tool of engagement. The study of conscious and unconscious leaves the observer with the unsettling feeling that there is more to the stories than meets the eye.

  • Miles Aldridge

    April 13th, 2016

This Technicolor photo set of Estelle Chan by photographer Miles Aldridge captivated me with its surreal vintage flare.

    4

Everything is so sublimely artificial and constructed; a glorious Stepford Wife presentation that one can hardly help editorializing at a glance.

    2

    3

These color-saturated high fashion shots are undeniably cinematic. Alridge says “I want to set a sort of unsettling message. But my trick is to sugarcoat it in these bright colors.”

    Mission accomplished, sir!

  • The Bob Baker Marionette Theater

    April 11th, 2016

I hope I’m able to get to Los Angeles and visit the The Bob Baker Marionette Theater before it closes down. This landmark theater, created in 1962 out of a run down old shop, may not be anything special on the outside…but has been described as a “giant velvet 1960’s Christmas present” on the inside.

    bb1

    bb2

There is no stage, leaving little separation between the audience and the show (many guests sit on the floor). All of the marionettes have so much character, and the theater’s inventory now exceeds 3,000 of them according to a recent article.

Has anyone visited this theater? What did you you think?

  • Christine McConnell: Deceptive Desserts

    April 9th, 2016

Deceptive Desserts is a new book by the amazing Christine McConnell.

Look at this nice, healthy bowl of fruit:

PSYCH! It’s cake! Sweet, delicious cake. It still counts as healthy because it looks just like fruit though, right?

  • Conrad Haberland

    April 8th, 2016

Conrad Haberland was another random Instagram find for me.

    ch1

His style is rather unique among the pop surrealists…
    ch3

…and his use of typically divergent styles in the same composition can work really well.

  • Stephanie Law

    April 6th, 2016

Stephanie Law paints gorgeous, lush nature scapes.
    1302

    From the artist bio:
Stephanie Law’s work is an exploration of mythology mixed with her personal symbolism. Her art journeys through surreal otherworlds, populated by dreamlike figures, masked creatures, and winged shadows.

    1218

The fantastical permeates through the visions, and you get a sense that this is a world that underlies our own, when viewed with a desire for beauty and a shifted perception.

Archetypes, the basis for the universal appeal of mythological concepts, are one of the defining inspirations for her imagery. This is mingled with the movement of dance.

    1292

Stephanie has been a dancer for almost two decades, and she uses that experience of how the human body moves and emotes to create a bridge into her artwork so that not only do the humans dance across the page, but the very branches of her trees seem to move with a sinuous grace, and the arrangement of inanimate elements has a choreographed rhythm and flow.

  • Tom Lohner

    April 5th, 2016

I really love Tom Lohner’s animal series.

    the+astronaut

They have a kind of bionic, sci-fi vibe to them, though on a literal level they are anthropomorphizing animals in very human situations.
    the+cameraman1

In the description of these pieces, Lohner draws attention to the way animals exist on instinct, and questions the “superiority” humans tend to believe they have over the animal kingdom (I, for one, always swear that my cats can teach me a lot, and have much respect for the authentic, zen nature of wild animals!).

    Today I bring you Ephemereality.
    12748199_1076284232434244_1299002906_n

Many of her works fuse the beautiful and oh-so-slightly macabre or strange.
    1391203_564356337072360_96843794_n

She states: “Beauty is fleeting, but art can capture that fleeting moment and make it an eternity. I seek to catch these ephemeral artistic pauses of life and imagination, and create instances that can last forever.”
