  • Ivica Stevanovic

    March 15th, 2012

I just spent a while digging though Ivica Stevanovic’s portfolio.

There are some nice children’s book illustrations, but I’m partial to the fantastic monsters, ghouls, ghosts and goblins in the mix.

It was also fun to explore the comic and graphic novel pages. See more here.

  • The Book Tank

    March 14th, 2012

Now this is an idea I can get behind!

Raul Lemesoff converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into an awesome open-air tank bookmobile. He drives around Buenos Aires offering books to anyone who wants them. The Weapon of Mass Instruction, as Lemesoff calls it, promotes “peace through literature.” Lemesoff has already driven it to remote regions of Argentina and hopes to expand the project into other nations.

Think I could do this on a Honda Civic?

  • John Clowder

    March 13th, 2012

How could I not be a fan of John Clowder’s collage work? From the artist statement:

Our resource constituency comprises obsolete adverts, morbid medical texts, bone atlases, and zoographic curios.

    I’m sold!

  • Vintage Creepy Doll Commercial

    March 12th, 2012

Does anyone have information about this company or product? All I know is, this commercial is AMAZING.

Really…take 30 seconds of your life to watch this.

  • Nancy Fouts

    March 11th, 2012

This particular sculpture (I wish it were an actual product) drew me into Nancy Fouts’s work.

She has a number of other interesting, surreal little pieces as well.

  • Face Off: Tim Burton

    March 10th, 2012

Face Off very effectively pits my love of horror makeup design against my aversion to reality TV (WHY can’t this be a regular documentary series? Fewer petty squabbles and more monsters, please!).

Contestants are given various cinematic makeup challenges. Recently they were asked to create something that looks “Tim Burton inspired.” I inadvertently caught about 10 seconds of this episode and figured I’d check out the results.

Here are some of the creations.

    This was the challenge winner:

Since most of you reading this have probably seen a Burton film or two (*wink, wink*)…what do you think of these? The winner was pretty well done, but I’m also a fan of the bellhop character.

I think the episode will be on Hulu at some point. See a little recap here.

  • Superhero Cookbooks

    March 9th, 2012

These were slightly before my time so I didn’t own them as a child, but in the 1970’s DC and Marvel released the culinary secrets of their famed superheroes.

Here are some bits and pieces of them, in no particular order.

Did anyone have these? I wasn’t able to find too many scans or decent sized images. I would absolutely LOVE to see the rest of these books so I can take ALL of my food recommendations from superheroes.

    Gooey cheese, folks! GOOEY CHEESE!

  • Karolin Felix

    March 8th, 2012

I came upon Karolin Felix when searching for pop surrealism twin images.

Her site turned out to be a treasure trove of wonderful creations: art, one of a kind painted jewelry, sculpture…

Her whole product catalog is wonderful…

  • An Amazing Imaginary Friend

    March 7th, 2012

Part of me hopes this is not a forgery. Some child has drawn and documented her imaginary friend “Lisa”…the one on the right.

Clearly, this girl is awesome. A very open-minded little soul. And why shouldn’t Lisa get to play with the other kids?

Leave it to adults to come along a ruin a nice friendship between the living and the dead. Don’t worry though…it works out in the end.

    See the rest here.

  • Ann Mei

    March 6th, 2012

I do not know much about Ann Mei except for what exists on her deviantART page.

My personal favorites from her collection of digitally manipulated photographs involve strange contraptions of unknown purpose and function.

The impish grin and machinations of this child remind me of myself as a youngster.

On a somewhat related note, if anyone has suggestions for art, photography or sculptures involving crazy contraptions or Rube Goldberg-like machinery, please share!

See more of Ann Mei’s work here.
