  • Davood Teymooj

    May 12th, 2016

I invite you into the slightly disquieting world of Davood Teymooj.

    dt3

With heavy use of cross hatching and pointilism, he draws strange, somber masked child-like (hydrocephalic-looking) creatures on journeys, or in deep pensive moments.
    dt1

As a Jungian, it’s hard not to read into the symbolism. We all wear masks, are underdeveloped in some ways, and get a bit too much “in our heads.” Or maybe not of that applies to his work. But great art is subjective.

Matt Gordon paints adorable little monsters and skeletons…

    tumblr_nni2az4Lr41u6q9pyo1_1280

In his hands, these “scary” creatures become innocent, playful, affectionate, reflective characters with real feelings. Gotta love a skeleton…in a skeleton onesie. Very nice touch.

How do I get my hands on this?

This came up in my Amazon suggestions. Best mouse pad I’ve ever seen. I may buy it for my such clicks and many scrolls. And I like its enthusiasm: “Wow.”

I tried to find this album on YouTube so we could take a listen. Art definitely looks the part(y) here.

I have no idea who makes these, but they’re rather amazing.

  • Harumi Hironaka

    May 9th, 2016

I’m home after a week in the hospital, but the problem (a section of my small intestine “broke”) is nowhere near under control. I’m not sure how frequently I’ll be able to post, but I’ll try.

This image by Harumi Hironaka describes my current state of mind.

Ah, a robotic body…can I have one of those?

Sorry for the lack of posts. I’ve been in the hospital all week without my laptop. Not sure when I’m getting out of here, but perhaps I’ll have computer access soon!

    May 3rd, 2016

It’s hard to articulate exactly what I love so much about Catherine Hart’s colorful, abstract drawings.

    ch2

I think it’s the interesting composition combined with a certain whimsical imagination.

  • Flaval: Photorealistic Eyes

    May 2nd, 2016

There are only a few of them in Flaval’s DeviantArt gallery, but these hyper-realistic pencil drawings are amazing.

    Fascinating, eh?

There are also portraits. I look forward to seeing more from this artist, as he appears to really be honing his realism techniques.

  • Stéphane Rosse

    May 1st, 2016

Stéphane Rosse creates truly bizarre art; part retro comic, part mind-bending trip into an alternate universe where skeletons and strange creatures conduct mysterious business and have wild adventures.

    tumblr_nblsr8Zw3f1tx23ndo1_1280

One of my favorite things about Rosse’s pieces is that (at least in some of the more involved scenes) it’s delightfully difficult to construct a narrative. You just have to suspend your disbelief and jump in.

  • Nanami Cowdroy

    April 30th, 2016

Nanami Cowdroy creates gorgeously detailed, lively monochromatic paintings.

    ACE01

Her pieces are whimsical, elaborate and imaginative, often combining mismatched elements.

    bf01

She was born in Sydney, but has also been deeply influenced by her Japanese heritage. The magic happens where the two intersect.

    From the artist bio:
Referring to Tokyo as “a big concrete mass,” she says she finds the lack of space and the size of its population ultimately incredibly inspiring. “What could be viewed as ‘ugly’ like tangled up power lines, cramped alleys and gritty streets, I feel has it’s own ‘raw’ appeal … as it’s not trying to cover up anything.”

    db01

In contrast, Sydney is her complementary muse and a fitting balance to the mega metropolis of Tokyo. “We’re lucky to have such great open spaces, and leafy areas in and around the city. It’s not that hard to find a place to sit down and take a break, or catch a breathe away from the concrete shadows.”

    IC01

We also see fish and sea creatures recurring in her work. Cowdroy sees them as the ultimate embodiment of contrast; “elegant and quirky, delicate yet spirited.”

  • Antique Melodramatic Shakespearean Actor Portraits

    April 28th, 2016

Atlas Obscura Just posted a feature on “gloriously melodramatic” Shakespearean actor portraits dating back over a Century ago.

    image6

Studio portraits were self-promotional tools which often depicted actors in a dramatic pose, against a backdrop of scenery. This may be my favorite I’ve seen (tied with the one above):
    image10

    image2

While some of them are humorous, they do serve the purpose of demonstrating an actor is capable of the exaggerated expressions necessary to convey emotion from a stage (or grainy film).
    image5

The male character portraits seem more entertainingly dramatic, but you can see some ladies over at Atlas Obscura too.
