  • We Interrupt This Blog for a Serendipitous Kitten Rescue Story

    June 29th, 2016

In an utterly surreal event, THIS ran under our car in the middle of moving traffic on a gigantic highway yesterday. It was the very last place one would expect to find a kitten, as there were no wooded or residential areas for many miles. He was all the way in the left lane, and undoubtedly seconds from being roadkill. We screeched to a halt and scooped him up. He’s 7-8 weeks old, one pound, around the size of an adult fist.

    20160629_083026

He has a shockingly sweet temperament for a feral, and checked out fine at the vet. We have a black and white cat already, and this fellow is black AND white. Fate, right?

    20160628_211701

I’ll never forget the site of Casey emerging from under the car holding this fellow as traffic frantically whooshed by in all directions. He opened the door and said “I guess we have a new kitten.” “Um…I guess so!” I said…already completely in love (can you blame me with that face?).

    Name ideas, anyone?

  • Seiji Kawasaki: Wooden Food

    June 28th, 2016

I couldn’t find an artist homepage for Japanese wood sculptor Seji Kawasaki, but I did find a great Instagram (which I was almost reluctant to follow because I feared while scanning my feed I’d think “Oh great, more pictures of peoples’ boring food.”)

The textures and hyper-real presentation he achieves are pretty incredible, no?

  • Just a Little Pulp Art for Your Sunday

    June 26th, 2016

I’ve always wanted to post a bunch of great pulp art here, but it’s an overwhelming thought since my pulp archives contain thousands of images. How does one even choose?

Well, another blog I follow recently posted a bunch of images (some of which I had, some not), so here are a few choice cuts!

  • Nathalia Suellen

    June 25th, 2016

Nathalia Suellen is an incredibly talented young Brazillian artist, whose saturated colors and vivid surrealist narratives remind me of the great Ray Caesar and Natalie Shau (I think the three of them are the best at this type of photo-hybrid art in the world).

    From the artist bio:
Her current artworks are born from a high-detailed mixture of photography, 3D and digital painting showing a signature style that blends symbolism, retro-futurism, death and dystopia with extremely colorful surrealistic worlds. Her main characters are often captured in scenes where something sad is about to happen, as if they were trapped in a bad dream.

I just discovered Sausage Studios and I’m really, really digging these films.

    Sausage Studios 1

The characters have a particular aesthetic that always appeals to me (not sure exactly what one might call it, but I recognize it when I see it)
    Sausage Studios 2

    Sausage Studios 3

There are two full short films available as of this posting. Check them out!

  • Times, They Are A-Changin’

    June 21st, 2016

I’m a late adopter of social media, and late to let go of tools I love. But I’m aware non-monetized blogging is “dead” and increasingly find that people prefer their media in bite sized morsels. Many artists post incredible work on Instagram that is never (or not yet) added to their web portfolio. And while I do stay on the pulse of the contemporary art world, those countless in-the-moment findings are almost never reflected here.

    3bc69a62907ac03319df610cb7cddee6

So I’ll be opening up the format of SWS to include both regular posts, and less formal brief posts with a feature image, and the artist links/handle. I will also no longer limit myself to one post (or very few) about each artist over time. This is the best way for me to keep the SWS archives in place and put out a larger, more current fresh crop of imagery. It will also allow me to focus appropriately on my health and related pressing matters in my non-blog life.

    2cbe7ccbdb902879e399bd9dba84baca

My Instagram will have a slew of other artistic/creative content that is not cross posted anywhere, so follow there if you’d like.

All artists I post will also have some of their work shared to Pinterest if you prefer that format.

Thanks for bearing with me! I’m not sure how this experiment will turn out, but I hope it works. 🙂

  • Yari Di Giampietro

    June 20th, 2016

Today I bring you the work of Yari Di Giampietro.

His style ranges from figurative studies (including many hands, which he’s quite good at painting) to raunchy pop surrealism filled with grotesque expressions and disembodied organs.

  • Bizarre Celebrity Cookbook Megapost

    June 19th, 2016

I’ve had these kicking around my hard drive for years. Why not share some bizarre, retro and/or otherwise laughable celebrity culinary publication efforts.

I really want to see what’s in this one!
