Strange Remains Week: Fireworks, Bullets, Hourglasses andTattoos

Posted in absurd, body decoration, death, humor, video with tags , , , , on March 22, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

We’ve come to the final post of Strange Remains Week (I thought it was interesting, but my readership dropped by HALF for these posts only, so I gather others were not as entertained. Sorry!).

So let’s go out with a bang. Literally. Heavens Above Fireworks will shoot cremains into the air. This is great for anyone who is asked “What makes an ideal funeral” and replies “pyrotechnics.”

We offer a variety of professional fired displays. These are planned to meet specific client requests and can be supported by other activities. We also offer other services including rockets for self firing incorporating funeral ashes and these can be supported by other fireworks to create your own mini display and we can provide the service for pets ashes too.

And speaking of bangs…did you know a human body can be turned into a bullet at Holy Smoke?

The process of having cremated ash placed in live ammunition begins when you contact us. Once the caliber, gauge and other ammunition parameters have been selected, we will ask you (by way of your funeral service provider) to send approximately one pound of the decedents ash to us. Upon receiving the ashes our professional and reverent staff will place a measured portion of ash into each shotshell or cartridge.

The bottom of their website features this image, for no discernible reason.

I’ve always had a thing for hourglasses (one day I’d like to have a nice one in my library). They make a rather poignant cremation statement, don’t they? In The Light Urns can do it.

The Rings of Time Hourglass Keepsake Urn makes a statement due to it’s beautiful workmanship and size. It is a wonderful way to reflect on the sands of time and the time that you and your loved one shared.

Hourglass urns for ashes are made differently than a regular hourglass timer. The Rings of Time Hourglass Keepsake Urn is a keepsake and holds a small portion of cremains. They cannot be an exactly timed, due to the consistency of the cremains. However, they are a memorial like no other. The hourglass is the ultimate symbol of the passage of time, and will become an family heirloom, passed down for generations.

Memorial tattoos are nothing new, but using ashes in tattoo ink has gained a bit of ground (it’s only a “microscopic amount” so it’s more of a symbolic gesture).

One tattoo artist made a video about the process:

As Mel Blanc said…that’s all folks.

X-Presion Pixelated Hair

Posted in body decoration, fashion, geek, hair with tags , , , on February 20, 2015 by shewalkssoftly

X-Presion, a unique, cutting edge hair studio, recently debuted a coloring technique that mimics colored pixels.

At this stage in my life, I doubt I’d ever be daring enough to do such a thing (and it might look a bit less striking on blondes).

Side note: back in college I had jet black hair, and when I went to a professional salon to restore my normal color, I ended up with something similar to this…and by “similar” I mean every color between blonde and black in splotches with no particular pattern. It looked like I’d lost a bet or fallen victim to a seriously awful prank. I wish I’d taken a picture.

Would you try this?

Halloween Countdown: Sugar Skull Doll

Posted in body decoration, day of the dead, halloween, makeup with tags , , , on October 25, 2014 by shewalkssoftly

Here is a different twist on traditional sugar skull makeup; a well done explosion of pink and plastic.

Anyone remember those plastic charm necklaces in the 80’s? Those were great. Just sayin’.

The handmade wig really makes this look.

Halloween Countdown: Extraordinary Face Painting

Posted in body decoration, halloween, makeup with tags , , on October 24, 2014 by shewalkssoftly

There is face painting, and there is total face transformation. Some artists are so skilled with costume makeup that they create elaborate optical illusions on the canvas of the human face.

It must take a great deal of patience (for the artist and model) to make these masterpieces happen.

Have you come across any incredible makeup this season? Have you painted your own face?

The Faerie Market: Moth Clip

Sometimes “there’s a bug in your hair!” isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

While pricey, I admire the craftsmanship on this Emperor Gum Moth Hair Clip.

I have a bizarre habit of considering accessories according to what unusual museum exhibit I’d hypothetically be likely to wear them to…plenty of entomological displays came to mind for this one.

Would you wear pretty bugs, birds and beasts in your hair?

Image Odyssey: Awful Jesus Tattoos

Posted in absurd, body decoration, humor, image odyssey with tags , , , on January 6, 2012 by shewalkssoftly

I try to be an informed, responsible citizen and pay attention to the news. However, while browsing for important content that is somehow relevant to the state of the human condition, I came across something that The Internets deem quite newsworthy: Justin Bieber’s new Jesus tattoo.

So I figured there must be tons of awful Jesus tattoos out there. My search did not disappoint.

People of all religions or lack thereof…let us unite in our common faith in human beings…to make bad decisions.

Is this Jesus, Will Ferrell, or some kind of hybrid Ferrell Christ?

I don’t know what to say about this, other than “that’s a shame for everyone involved:”

Hm. Okay.

It looks like Jesus wears his sunglasses at night…

Just put the eyes *somewhere* on the face. Anywhere will do.

Easy, breezy, beautiful Cover Christ (Jesus is wearing Cover Girl smudge proof mascara, in “Film Noir”):

I’m speechless…I’m…sorry…I’m…uncomfortable and confused.

Poor Jesus looks so disgusted to be on this man’s head that he’s downright ill. I don’t blame him.

Same here:

Ready for a different twist? Jesus WITH a tattoo! Don’t like it? Tell it to his acid wash jeans!

Sadly, this post will probably get more hits (and disappointed viewers) than anything I’ve posted in years because it contains the words “Justin Bieber.”

Chadwick & Spector

Body painting: it’s not just for carnivals anymore. In their Museum Anatomy exhibit, Chadwick & Spector recreate fine art gallery selections on the human body.

This ambitious project must have been outrageously time consuming for both the artists and models.

There are many other breathtaking works on the artist site. Go have a look!

Evil Bunny Megapost

I tend to realize Easter is coming when I can get my hands on Cadbury Creme Eggs, but otherwise I pay very little attention to this holiday. However, I did manage to gather a substantial collection of evil bunnies to share.

Here is a previous post about bunnies from Thrift Horror Week, if you missed it.

Let’s start with some menacing mascots, shall we?

An old classic:

I get a really unwholesome feeling about this one:

And I sympathize with this guy:

How about a little face painting?

Now for some random lagomorphic horror:

I think this poor fellow has the mumps or something:

If you celebrate it, Happy Easter!

Owl Tattoos

Posted in body decoration with tags on December 9, 2008 by shewalkssoftly

Sometimes I randomly search for owl images, simply because I love them so much. I discovered a blog devoted entirely to owl tattoos.

The owl is one of my favorite creatures on earth (a recurring image in the things I make, buy and enjoy looking at). It possesses a rich symbolism, and I can appreciate that people have chosen to decorate themselves with such a worthy totem.

You’ll find some of the most bizarre chimera’s imaginable on the site (like the robot owl below)

The artistic scope and variation is amazing, ranging from the most basic patterns to the most detailed “sleeves.”

And then there are some that you’ll probably wish you could un-see.

If you share my love of these feathered friends, have a look.

Trust me when I tell you that you’ve never seen face painting like that of hawhawjames in your life. It manipulates the mind’s eye, skews perception and is simply all-around amazing.

I never bothered to get my face painted at carnivals (a little flower or peace sign begged the question “Why bother?”). But if I could have come home looking like this, you better believe I’d have been first in line!

There are hundreds of photos in his outstanding Flickr sets. You don’t want to miss them!
