My friend Liesje introduced me to the lovely collage work of Adrienne Slane.
From the artist statement:
I combine images of plants, insects, animals, human anatomy, and religious figures into detailed, colorful collages where individual elements fit together like pieces in a puzzle. Inspired by the history of the curiosity cabinet, the Victorian concept of momento mori, and Christian iconography and ritual, my work celebrates the beauty and interconnectivity of nature while also acknowledging the cyclical aspect of life, death, and decay. My work blends elements of science, myth, and religion into images that pay homage to the past within a contemporary context.
Needless to say, her entire range of subject matter appeals to me.

Mmmm, clipart galore. I guess the third one implies having a heart rooted to the earth. Other than that, I’m lost, maybe if I drink a glass of wine I’ll get it.

I can certainly admire the skill required to fashion collages as intricate as these (the first two are amazingly complex) and I love the startling way Slane blends such disparate elements together.
Putting on my Illustrator’s Hat for just a moment though, I hope where possible (and I appreciate with vintage material this often ISN’T possible) she credits the original artists of the illustrations she uses. I’m sure copyright isn’t an issue, but I still think it’d be a nice gesture to acknowledge the folk who’ve helped her make her ideas come alive. -Nx
Agreed. I always try very hard to cite my sources on everything because the internet is SO full of people displaying the work of others without credit. People even rip off my blog posts completely (I feel guilty not having a source link! Many folks copy and move on though).
