I have a bit of a thing for renovated church houses. Practicality aside, the architecture, spaciousness and design…transformed into a place of residence…can be quite a sight to behold.
Here is a particularly nice one.
A nondescript exterior and a yard dominated by headstones give no indication of the residential nature of this historic church in Kyloe, Northumberland. A couple decided to purchase and readapt the structure, investing nearly three times the purchase price into renovations over the course of several years.
Restoration is more prevalent than renovation, with original stained glass windows throughout, and repurposed church fixtures abounding. Much of the original seating in the church was refinished and placed throughout the home.

In the North of Germany there’s a restaurant which was a church in former days. The owner first wanted to name it “Martini”, but because it once was the parish of St. Martin, but that was not allowed. Now it’s called “Glück und Seligkeit” which means “blessedness” or “bliss”

Oh, GOSH! Can you imagine the history within those walls and your own old graveyard to wander though and get to know! What an adventure to try and find who these people were. I find it so amazing that they (the ones buried next to the church) most likely attended services here and walked in this home. Like old barns I see crumbling, I also have a place in my heart for the old churches.
I think it would be beautiful to live in such a place.

Mom and I looked at a church house just before you were born, but it would have cost way too much to make livable. Unfortunately it was also in a not so good neighborhood.
The practicality of heating, cooling and renovating such a place does seem to be an issue. I would have loved to grow up in one of these houses though!
My parents almost bought an old mental institution. Us kids were super excited because we were going to get our own rooms (there are 10 of us kids) Sadly, it was going to be to much to fix up. They bought an old Victorian instead which was nice 🙂
