Gre-Gory the Big Bad Vampire Bat

In 1979, Matell released this wonderful toy: GRE-GORY THE BIG BAD VAMPIRE BAT.

Though the concept is rather arbitrary (never in all my years of being a bat connoisseur have I seen one with a translucent chest), kids must have loved this thing.

If I hadn’t sworn not to add more clutter to my house until I can get rid of some things, I’d be tracking this guy down on Ebay right now. Every grown woman needs plenty of monsters in the house, right?

And now for a look at Gre-Gory himself:

Does anyone have Gre-Gory? Did you have him as a child? Anyone just dying to get rid of one? 😉

  1. that. is awesome. I immediately clicked over to ebay before even scrolling to the end of this post. there’s one on ebay right now going for $45. a bit out of price range, but now I have something look for. for me the charm is all in that peculiarly-placed hyphen.

    • Ah, I knew you’d get a kick out of this one. I immediately went to ebay and was deterred by the price too. I’d love to have the space and disposable income to blow $45 on a little retro toy…but it’s not too practical on my grad student budget.

    • I’m going to start asking everyone I know if they had this delightful bat. I want to see him in person.
