Josef Fenneker

This recent Coilhouse post reminded me of my little Josef Fenneker folder tucked away in my art archives.

Fenneker was a revered illustrator in the early 1920’s, Germany. His posters adorned many theaters (most notably, the prestigious Marmorhaus).

I love his haunted, contorted figures…glowing eerily, moving unnaturally…beautiful, grotesque…

He makes fantastic use of contrast. Subjects, whether brightly colored or bloodless beasts, seem to pop from the stark black backgrounds.

More here.
