I’ve always wanted to post a bunch of great pulp art here, but it’s an overwhelming thought since my pulp archives contain thousands of images. How does one even choose?
Well, another blog I follow recently posted a bunch of images (some of which I had, some not), so here are a few choice cuts!

Dug Stanat is an awesome sculptor who specializes in creepy, crawly, and undead creations.
When I first saw some of these, I thought they were paintings. He can achieve an incredible sense of movement and weightlessness.

Doesn’t this look like it’s floating?

And here we have a cartoonishly gaunt fellow with bats in flight.

This looks like an awesome model kit.

I love this painting. Such a sense of longing.

I left the trademark that says “for personal purposes only,” because I imagine all of us have ultra-cute kitten purposes.

On the other hand, I see no earthly purpose for this:

So…extra crotch room for Chuck Norris style kicks was a selling point?

Matt Gordon paints adorable little monsters and skeletons…
In his hands, these “scary” creatures become innocent, playful, affectionate, reflective characters with real feelings. Gotta love a skeleton…in a skeleton onesie. Very nice touch.

Let’s take a moment to ogle the beauty of nature…

For some reason, people feel slightly uneasy in this chair.

A tad crass…but definitely my favorite faux Rand McNally cover:

Couldn’t they have thought of more appetizing adjectives than “semi-liquids?” I suppose it beats “lumpy, congealed and vomitous.”

Dana, Don’t make a joke about this car being cheesy…Don’t make a joke about this car being cheesy…Resist!

Did anyone have this as a kid? It looks awesome.

How can I get my hands on this book? This woman absolutely has life figured out.

Incredible building of unknown origin.

Gorgeous modern interpretation of Danse Macabre!

The old one was no fun at all…

A children’s book illustration. I’m sure no one had nightmares or anything.

David Chung (aka “The Chung”) paints a rainbow menagerie of monsters and lovable outcasts.
These colorful creatures, while undeniably hinting at the fact that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously, actually express a range of human emotions.

Hypnokitty says…you will read the entirety of this post…

I’m not sure if this was a recurring character or a one time thing, but it’s very unusual art for a motor oil ad.

I previously considered my own cats to be pretty well prepared, but I was quite mistaken.

The most projectile vomit I’ve ever seen in an antique colorized photo.

I’m surprised this never happened to me when I was deep in my heavy metal phase.

Fellow horror fans…I confess I felt remiss in my duties when I discovered there were a number of 80’s Christmas Horror Movies I haven’t seen. A kind reader sent me this list.
Luckily, 80’s Horror has compiled a nice list of every Christmas horror movie made in the decade. How many have you seen?
They also note two awesome TV episodes (which were staples of my childhood): Tales from the Darkside- Seasons of Belief…
And Tales from the Crypt- And All Through the House

Check out 80’s Christmas Horror Movies.

Thank you, Monster Brains for posting a HUGE collection of Walter McDougall illustrations (click to enlarge).
McDougall was a prolific newspaper illustrator in the late 1800’s. His work is sublimely imaginative and bizarre, dancing on the border of surrealist children’s fiction…and nightmares. The captions are brilliant.

I confess, I saved all 86 images in the post because I plan to read them like bedtime stories. Each image is a vignette unto itself, often with a single sentence presenting a strange predicament and/or creature.

Somehow, these fragments coagulate into stories when I see them…hazy at first, but overflowing with possibilities.

See the collection of images HERE.
