Zbigniew Liberia

I’m sure no one can forget Shave the Baby from a few days ago. Well, Steph found the origins. Turns out, it’s an art piece by Polish artist Zbigniew Liberia, and there’s plenty more shocking fare where this hirsute baby came from.

Magic Pony Jellyfish Installation

Oooh…I wish I could have seen this incredible jellyfish installation.

These pieces are hand sculpted from porcelain.

Chris Natrop

Have you ever wanted to feel like you were walking in a piece of graphic design art? Chris Natrop makes it possible.

For “Pink Dimension Burst,” he uses only watercolor on cut paper and tape:

“And Further the Dewdrop Falls” is a large installation comprised of cut paper and acrylic, watercolor, glitter, string and HD video projection.

Wouldn’t it be surreal to walk through?

Some of his pieces are cut paper suspended by wire, utilizing cast shadows are a mainstay of the design.

And then there are entire rooms of precisely cut pieces ans perfect shadows.

If I ever had a truly “spare” room, purely for decoration, I’d be quite happy to let Natrop have his way with the space.

Kris Kuksi

I have to attempt a trip to the Joshua Liner Gallery before December 20th to see Kris Kuksi’s new solo exhibition.

Pardon me as I get lost in these sculptures for a few hours…

On his website, Kuksi describes his work:

I get inspired by the industrial world, all the rigidity of machinery, the network of pipes, wires, refineries, etc. Then I join that with an opposite of flowing graceful, harmonious, and pleasing design of the Baroque and Rococo. And of course I add a bit weirdness and the macabre.

I did wonder about his materials, and was glad to see him cover the subject:

Sculptural works are wonderfully intricate constructions of pop culture effluvia like plastic model kits, injection molded toys, dolls, plastic skulls, knick-knack figurines, miniature fencing, toy animals, mechanical parts and ornate frames or furniture parts; assembled into grotesque tableaux that look a bit like an explosion in Hieronymus Bosch’s attic.

Kuksi is truly a talented individual with a wide artistic scope. Check out his site for more.
The Eden Project: Field of Light

I would love to get lost in this installation by creative lighting designer Bruce Munro at The Eden Project.

Thousands of fiber optic cables support acrylic orbs, illuminating the landscape like a field of bioluminescent vegitation.

Doris Salcedo

In 2003, Doris Salcedo put together this truly impressive installation for the International Istanbul Biennale.

It looks like the place where chairs go to die. I can only imagine what it must have been like to randomly pass this in the street.

Sound Wave makes me nostalgic for the days of my youth, before vinyl slipped into tragic obsolescence.

“My Back Pages” by Paul Villinsky

Sculptures like this are part of the reason I collect/save so many seemingly useless object. You never know when you can use them. View the slide show for more examples of everyday objects re-contextualized and rebuilt.
The WEEE Man

The WEEE Man is not only a robot one might expect to see in post-apocalyptic sci-fi; it’s a statement.

The WEEE man, designed by Paul Bonomini, is a huge robotic figure made of scrap electrical and electronic equipment. It weighs 3.3 tonnes and stands seven meters tall – representing the average amount of e-products every single one of us throws away over a lifetime.

If I were in the UK, I’d like to pay WEEE Man a visit.
Defenestration

I love anthropomorphic sculpture, so I was delighted to see pictures of the Defenestration installation in San Francisco.

Teamwork!

I have no idea why I enjoy the idea of furniture coming to life and fleeing a building, but I do. They’ve just…had enough!

Sandrine Pelletier

Sandrine Pelletier is a multimedia delight.

Her clay sculptures evoke the same disquieting feelings that I love in Scott Radke’s marionettes.

Her Angorophobia installation made me chuckle out loud (extra points for the clever word play!).

The Dark Crystal uses lace and beads to replicate a crystal formation. I think it turned out beautifully.

Pelletier also has a number of incredible creations made of latex and lace, such as Nage Macabre:
