Anne Bobroff-Hajal: Russian History

Posted in absurd, history, illustration with tags , , on March 10, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

Bless my dear Rachel’s late night internet searches, which led me to Anne Bobroff-Hajal’s incredible Russian History illustrations.
IvanDancingGlobe1

Rachel came across THIS incredible illustration, with no explanation whatsoever. It turned out to be a depiction of Ivan he Terrible blessing a mustachioed baby Joseph Stalin (but it’s more entertaining with no idea that it’s supposed to be political satire). I rather enjoyed her recounting the Google image searches that finally led to the image source…including, but not limited to “flying broomstick mustache baby.”

The artist bio describes Bobroff-Hajal’s work as detailed and whimsical visual stories about powerful human motivations: love, greed, grief, competition, fury.

Let’s take a moment to ogle the beauty of nature…

A tad crass…but definitely my favorite faux Rand McNally cover:

Couldn’t they have thought of more appetizing adjectives than “semi-liquids?” I suppose it beats “lumpy, congealed and vomitous.”

Karl Mountford

The following skeleton serenade was my introduction to Karl Mountford.

His style reminds me of the vibrant retro illustrations I used to love as a kid (eg. Mary Blair, but Mountford really brings his own energy to his work).

Walter McDougall

Thank you, Monster Brains for posting a HUGE collection of Walter McDougall illustrations (click to enlarge).

McDougall was a prolific newspaper illustrator in the late 1800’s. His work is sublimely imaginative and bizarre, dancing on the border of surrealist children’s fiction…and nightmares. The captions are brilliant.

I confess, I saved all 86 images in the post because I plan to read them like bedtime stories. Each image is a vignette unto itself, often with a single sentence presenting a strange predicament and/or creature.

Somehow, these fragments coagulate into stories when I see them…hazy at first, but overflowing with possibilities.

There Were Three Ghostesses

And Everything Else Too posted a bizarre nursery rhyme that, if not the easiest to say, is most certainly memorable. I adore the accompanying illustration.

My unbelievably talented friend William Basso introduced me to the work of Mariko Ando, an artist and printmaker born in Japan and currently based in Vancouver.

What will you find here? BUNNIES. And lots of them. Which is fine by me, because I’m a fan of all things Lagomorphic.

This is probably one of my favorite illustrations ever. One look, and I want to dive right into this place. A squishy, gorgeous bed in a tree, complete with chandelier, my own swing and the company of owls? YES PLEASE.

I love her lush, finely detailed style.

Is this fish holding a “recipe for vegans?” I’m surprised more animals don’t carry around vegan cookbooks.
