Rock Made, by Craig Kanarick

Such a simple idea, yet it works so well. Craig Karanick has a series of prints that group candies by color.

I do love “red flavored” things. If it’s not chocolate for me, it pretty much has to be red.

The particular combination of sugar, nostalgia and some unfamiliar (but interesting) candy pieces in these images just does it for me.

I find it least appetizing, but this one would compliment my own decor quite nicely:

Although the blue collection is sparse (and seems to be the color of choice for candy underwear and athletic garb), I’m including it for Brian H:

Viral Art

InformationWeek featured an interesting project in which artists Artists Alex Dragulescu and Julian Hodgson accepted a commission to create visualizations of computer viruses.

Using pieces of disassembled code, API calls, memory addresses, and subroutines associated with the bane of a security team’s existence, they analyzed the data by frequency, density, and groupings.

Algorithms were then developed and the artists mapped the data to the inputs of the algorithms, which then generated virtual 3-D entities.

The patterns and rhythms found in the data gave shape to the configuration of the artificial organisms, and the result was a series of images called Malwarez.

A Few Random Sci-Fi Covers

Monster Brains just featured a great collection of vintage sci-fi book cover art. I have a few favorites from the bunch.

This one definitely warrants a caption contest. What exactly is the facial expression on the giant fish creature as he drains the blood of the young boy? Is he awestruck? Terrified? Aroused?

This enormous, lush-lipped bat seems to have whole forests on its hind quarters, and possibly a castle:

And you have to commend the imagination of this psychedelic, robotic, architectural, ant infested, lupine, space-collage skull…thing:
Roland Tamayo

Roland Tamayo has a knack for creating marine-industrial hybrids and surreal fusions of nature, technology, man-made structures, and otherwordly atmospheres.

They are wonderful assemblages of subconscious puzzle pieces…

Eno Henze

I am so in love with the colorful, flowing designs of Eno Henze.

His pieces are done digitally, as an exploration of the collaborative process between man and machine.

The results are sinewy, gossamer structures that seem to be floating and moving through space. It feels like looking at a freeze frame of a gracefully moving organic being.

Virginia Fleck

If I come home from a store with plastic bags, I generally stuff them by my washer and dryer for future use. Virginia Fleck turns them into works of art.

Using only bags and tape, she constructs beautifully detailed, textured mandalas.

Nested in these lovely works is, undoubtedly, some implicit commentary on consumerist culture. Her website features this quote from Gina Piccalo:

“Life is being captured, repackaged and sold back to us as quickly as we live it.”

No one repackages the packaging as well as Virginia Fleck! Check out the impressive collection here.
Jon Reinfurt

Jon Reinfurt has a wonderful portfolio of contorted figures and collage work (some have a kind of “Picasso for the new millennium” feeling), but I’m partial to his robots.

Especially his robots with food! Look at this one enjoying the Chipwich harvest:

Michael Hiep

Michael Hiep appropriately calls himself a “fine art symbolist.” Hiep gathered inspiration training for the priesthood as he assisted in baptisms, weddings and funeral rites (he later left the seminary to pursue art).

His paintings are elaborate, richly detailed depictions of nature and symbolism.

Record Time

I’m not sure if any of my readers are in Australia, or would have access to the Record Time exhibit at Palmer Projects in Sydney.

24 renowned typographers, designers and artists come together as a tribute to the vinyl record. In an age when tapes, CDs, and records are becoming increasingly obsolete, the Record Time show pays homage to the one and only vinyl record.

With the increasing consumption of digital music, disused vinyl records now gather dust the world over, many of which lie in scratched piles at book exchanges, permanently abandoned. Relics of bygone eras, old records were often emblazoned with beautiful typography and logos unique to a moment in time and genre specific.

The inspiration behind the exhibition concept is to focus on the record as a medium and create a renewed functionality. Turning the records into laser etched time pieces (clocks), added purpose to objects, which had otherwise become obsolete. –Source

Alexis Anne’s collages of ephemera are fantastical journeys for the eye.

Her designs are a beautiful combination of vintage print material and modern surrealism.

The style lends itself wonderfully to little scenarios isolated outside of space and time.
